What is an llms.txt file?
An llms.txt file is a plain-text Markdown file at the root of your domain, at yoursite.com/llms.txt, that gives AI assistants a curated map of your most important pages. It starts with your name, a one-line summary they can quote, and sectioned lists of the pages you most want cited, so models read a clean guide instead of guessing from your raw HTML.
Served at yoursite.com/llms.txt, the same convention as robots.txt, so assistants and crawlers know where to look.

What goes in it
Six things belong in a good llms.txt.
The format is deliberately simple: Markdown a person can read and a model can parse. The generator builds all of this for you.
The first line is a single # heading, your exact brand name, the first thing a model reads.
A > blockquote in one sentence saying what you do and who for. This is the line models lift to describe you.
A few plain sentences for anything a model needs to place you: your category, what makes you different, key facts.
Group your important URLs under ## headings (Docs, Product, Pricing), each a Markdown bullet with an optional note.
A curated map, not a sitemap. List the clean, answer-ready pages you would be happy to see quoted, and leave the rest out.
Full https:// links, not relative paths, so a model reading the file out of context can still resolve every page.

What good looks like
A short, current, honest map beats a data dump.
The temptation is to list everything. Resist it. The files that help a model are curated, answer-ready, and kept fresh.
The best files list a few dozen high-value pages, not every URL. A model can read a focused map; a 4,000-line dump helps no one.
Link the pages that are clean, self-contained, and safe to quote: your definitions, docs, comparisons and pricing, not thin or duplicate pages.
Write the summary and notes the way you want to be described. Models lift these lines close to verbatim, so no hype and no jargon.
Update the file when you ship or restructure key pages. Assistants favor current sources, and a stale map sends them to the wrong place.
llms.txt points to your pages; it does not fix them. The pages it links to still need clear structure and schema to earn the citation.

Where do I put the llms.txt file?
At the root of your domain, so it resolves at yoursite.com/llms.txt, the same convention as robots.txt. On WordPress, Webflow, Framer, Shopify or a static host, upload it to the public root or use your platform's file-upload or redirect feature so that exact path returns the file as plain text.
Does llms.txt actually improve my AI visibility?
It is a low-cost, low-risk signal, not a guarantee. Adoption by the major AI crawlers is still partial, and a file on its own does not make a model cite you. What moves the needle is the pages it points to being clean, well-structured and authoritative, plus being present on the third-party sources models trust. Think of llms.txt as making your best content easy to find, one input among many.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt or a sitemap?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may access, and a sitemap lists every URL for search indexing. llms.txt is different: a short, curated, human-written guide to your best pages, written for AI assistants to read and quote. A sitemap is exhaustive and machine-generated; a good llms.txt is selective and hand-picked.
What should I include in my llms.txt?
Your name as an H1, a one-sentence summary in a blockquote, optional context paragraphs, and sectioned lists of the pages you most want cited: definitions and glossaries, documentation, comparison and pricing pages, and cornerstone guides. Use absolute https:// URLs, add a short note after each link where it helps, and leave out thin, duplicate or private pages.
How often should I update llms.txt?
Whenever you publish or restructure the pages it points to, and otherwise on a light rolling basis. Assistants favor fresh sources, so a file that reflects your current best pages beats one that quietly points to URLs you have since moved or retired. Regenerating and re-uploading takes a minute.
