TL;DR

AthenaHQ is the pick if AI search is its own job: it tracks five models free and 11 on a $295 Starter plan, and its agent drafts and publishes fixes to your CMS; Semrush is the pick if AI search is one more report inside the SEO suite you already run, with a $99 a month toolkit per domain (25 prompts a day, five engines) or AI tracking bundled into Semrush One from $199. Prefer, our product, starts lower than both paid entries at $24 a month, tracks five engines and writes 15 AI articles a month on that plan.

The split is dedicated platform versus suite add-on. AthenaHQ was built for AI search alone: credits buy AI responses, the model list is the longest self-serve one on this page, and the product goes from gap to published page. Semrush was built for classic SEO and added an AI layer: it measures well, draws on a 317 million prompt database, and hands the work to its separate content tools, while its keyword, audit and backlink tooling sits one tab away. AthenaHQ has the free tier; Semrush has the SEO suite.

AthenaHQ vs Semrush at a glance
  • AthenaHQ has a free tier (300 credits, five models); Semrush has no free tier for AI visibility, and its toolkit card shows no trial (checked 19 September 2026).
  • Entry paid prices: Semrush's toolkit is $99/mo per domain for 25 prompts a day; AthenaHQ Starter is $295/mo ($245 billed annually) for 3,600 credits and 11 models.
  • Engines: Semrush's plan comparison lists five for the toolkit and saves Copilot, Grok, Claude and DeepSeek for custom Enterprise; AthenaHQ lists 11 on its self-serve Starter plan, Claude included.
  • AthenaHQ drafts and publishes to six CMS platforms and manages robots.txt and llms.txt; Semrush recommends, and its Content Toolkit and ContentShake AI are separate tools with no publish-to-site.
  • Semrush wins on breadth: keyword research, site audits, backlinks and rank tracking come with Semrush One. AthenaHQ does AI search only.

Prices checked September 2026 (AthenaHQ plans and Semrush pricing 19 Sep, G2 23 Sep) from each product's public pricing page.

AthenaHQ (Y Combinator W25, San Francisco, founded 2025 by an ex-Google Search engineer) positions itself as 'Action on AI Search': a free tier on five models, 11 models on a $295 Starter plan, and an agent that drafts and publishes to six CMS platforms. It carries a G2 High Performer badge for Answer Engine Optimization (4.9 out of 5 from 48 reviews) and SOC 2 Type 2. Semrush (founded 2008, Boston) is the established SEO suite, now an Adobe company after a $1.9B acquisition completed in April 2026. It sells AI visibility two ways: a standalone AI Visibility toolkit at $99 a month per domain, and bundled into Semrush One from $199 a month next to its keyword, audit and backlink tools. The suite holds 4.4 out of 5 from 4,039 G2 reviews and sits third on G2's enterprise AEO list. Sources

Which should you choose?

Choose AthenaHQ if…

  • AI search is a job of its own and you want a dedicated tool for it
  • You want to start free and see five models before paying anything

Choose Semrush if…

  • Your team already runs SEO in Semrush and wants AI visibility in the same place

  • Five engines and 25 to 200 prompts a day cover your market
  • You want the lower paid entry for tracking alone ($99 versus $295)
The third option · Our product

AthenaHQ vs Semrush, answered

Is AthenaHQ or Semrush better for AI search?

AthenaHQ is better if AI search is its own job, with a free five-model tier, 11 models on a $295 Starter plan and an agent that publishes fixes, and Semrush is better if you want AI visibility as one more report inside the SEO suite you already use, from $99 a month per domain. Prefer, our product, is a third option at $24 a month for five engines and 15 AI articles, and we say so because it is ours. Pick AthenaHQ for depth in AI search, Semrush for one vendor across SEO and AI.

Which is cheaper, AthenaHQ or Semrush?

AthenaHQ is cheaper to start, because its Essential tier is free, while Semrush's paid entry is lower: $99 a month per domain for its AI Visibility toolkit against $295 a month ($245 billed annually) for AthenaHQ Starter, both checked 19 September 2026. Prefer's Starter is $24 a month, below both paid entries, with a free trial on every paid plan. Semrush One, which adds the SEO suite, runs $199, $299 or $549 a month.

Which AI engines do AthenaHQ and Semrush track?

AthenaHQ tracks five models free (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot) and 11 on Starter, adding AI Mode, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral. Prefer, our product, tracks five on every plan: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Semrush's own plan comparison lists five for its toolkit (ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini) and keeps Copilot, Grok, Claude and DeepSeek for custom Enterprise. All checked 19 September 2026.

Does Semrush's AI toolkit create content like AthenaHQ?

Not in the same way: AthenaHQ's agent drafts on-brand pages and publishes them to Shopify, Webflow, Wix, Framer, WordPress or Payload, while Semrush's toolkit gives recommendations and leaves the writing to separate suite tools (Content Toolkit and ContentShake AI) with no publish-to-site. Prefer writes 15 AI articles a month on its $24 Starter plan, and more on higher plans. Semrush's own knowledge base describes checking a result with a manual incognito test rather than an automated re-run.

Do I need Semrush if I already use AthenaHQ, or the other way round?

They overlap on AI tracking and little else: Semrush adds keyword research, site audits, backlinks and rank tracking, which AthenaHQ does not do, and AthenaHQ adds a free tier, more models and a publishing agent, which Semrush's toolkit does not. Prefer, our product, covers the AI search side with Search Console and GA4 connected from Starter, but it is not a keyword or backlink suite either.

Which one handles off-page work?

Neither does it for you: AthenaHQ lists off-page actions on its Starter plan, which in practice are recommendations and outreach your team runs, and Semrush does not document off-page work for its AI toolkit. Prefer's self-serve plans do not include off-page work either; Reddit participation, PR and placements come with Prefer Enterprise and the done-for-you Prefer Managed service. So on self-serve plans, off-page stays with your team whichever of the three you pick.

Who is AthenaHQ best for?

Self-guided SMB and mid-market teams that want a dedicated AI search tool, want to start free on five models, and want an agent that turns gaps into published pages; AthenaHQ's own plan table labels Starter for self-guided SMBs and Enterprise for enterprises and agencies. Prefer suits the same buyer at a lower paid entry ($24 a month) with five engines and a done-for-you option. AthenaHQ's G2 reviewers praise its workflow and flag a thin prompt library and rough UI edges.

Who is Semrush best for?

Teams that already run SEO in Semrush and want AI visibility next to their keyword, audit and backlink data, from one vendor and one bill. Prefer is the dedicated alternative for teams whose priority is AI answers rather than classic SEO, from $24 a month. Semrush's scale is real: an Adobe company since April 2026, a 317 million prompt database, and 4,039 G2 reviews for the suite, though none rate the AI toolkit on its own.

What is the best alternative to AthenaHQ and Semrush?

Prefer is a strong pick if you want AI search tracking and the content work in one plan at a price you can see: it tracks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode with 30 prompts and writes 15 AI articles a month from $24 (free trial on every paid plan, free audit), with a done-for-you Managed option. The category also includes Profound, Peec AI, Scrunch and Otterly. See our roundup of the best AEO tools.
