The short answer

What is the most-cited source in AI search?

More than any brand's own site, any review platform, or any news outlet, AI cites Reddit. Across 25 B2B software buyer queries measured on August 19, 2026, Reddit was the #1 source ChatGPT cited on all 25 (about 30.3% of every citation, more than double the next source) and the #2 source on Google's AI, behind only YouTube.

Key takeaways

  • Reddit was the #1 source ChatGPT cited on all 25 B2B software buyer queries, about 30.3% of every source in its answers.
  • That is more than double the second source, Wikipedia (13.8%); TechRadar, Forbes and Indeed trail far behind.
  • On Google's AI (AI Overviews and AI Mode), Reddit was the #2 source behind only YouTube on 24 of 25 queries.
  • Reddit led ChatGPT in all eight software categories and never left the top three sources on either engine.

Ask ChatGPT or Google's AI to recommend software and they do not read the brands first, and they do not read the review sites first. They read Reddit. We measured which sources each engine cites across 25 real buyer queries, and Reddit came out on top or second every single time.

The one source ChatGPT cites most is Reddit

Across the 25 buyer queries, Reddit was the #1 cited source in ChatGPT's answers on every one. It made up 30.3% of all 118,245 source citations, more than double the second-place source, Wikipedia (13.8%). After that come the tech press and the jobs boards: TechRadar, Forbes, and Indeed. A public forum outranks all of them as ChatGPT's reading material.

Bar chart. Share of every source ChatGPT cited across 25 buyer queries: Reddit 30.3%, Wikipedia 13.8%, TechRadar 9.6%, Forbes 7.3%, Indeed 5.8%, NerdWallet 2.2%.

On Google's AI, Reddit is second only to YouTube

The same measurement on Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode tells a parallel story with a different winner. YouTube was first, and Reddit was second on 24 of the 25 queries. The two sources Google's AI leans on hardest are both places people post, not places brands publish. Traditional media, review sites, and vendors' own pages all trail them.

Bar chart. Times cited as a source across 25 queries (thousands): YouTube 909k, Reddit 512k, Zapier 118k, Indeed 109k, Salesforce 55k, Forbes 44k.

Reddit leads in every category we tested

This is not a quirk of one noisy category. Reddit was the top source ChatGPT cited in all eight software categories, from 26.6% in hr & recruiting to 33.7% in customer support. Across all 25 queries and both engines, there was not one software question where Reddit fell out of the top three sources (50 of 50 results).

Bar chart. Reddit's share of ChatGPT's sources, by category: Customer support 33.7%, Marketing 31.8%, SEO & AI tools 31.6%, Ecommerce 31%, Project management 29.8%, Accounting 29%, CRM & sales 27.4%, HR & recruiting 26.6%.

Your AI visibility runs through a site you don't own

Here is the uncomfortable part. A large slice of your AI visibility now depends on a website you do not own and cannot publish to on demand. You can ship the best docs and comparison pages on the internet and still lose the AI recommendation to a Reddit thread you have never read.

That does not mean astroturfing, which Reddit communities are good at catching and which is a real brand risk. When Reddit is the source AI reads most, three honest moves matter: know your share of the AI answers that mention your category, show up authentically in the threads where buyers already compare tools, and track it per engine, because ChatGPT and Google do not cite the same things. That is the loop Prefer runs: see where you stand, understand why, and do the work that moves it.

How we measured this

On August 19, 2026, we queried the DataForSEO LLM Mentions database for 25 real B2B software buyer queries across 8 categories, on two platforms: ChatGPT and Google's AI (AI Overviews and AI Mode). For each query we pulled the ranked list of source domains behind the answers and recorded Reddit's rank and share. Two honest caveats: this is one measured run, US and English only, so treat the figures as directional; and ChatGPT's shares are a clean split of all source citations, while Google's per-source counts are response-level (they do not sum to 100%), so we report Google by rank, not a percentage you can compare to ChatGPT. A few queries pulled in loosely related topics, and Reddit still led those.
