Why the gap happens#
ChatGPT answers about a company by retrieving text, either from its training data or a live web search, so if little authoritative text about you exists, it has nothing accurate to pull. Prefer’s free AI visibility audit shows what it finds about you today. OpenAI’s own documentation describes how ChatGPT decides to search the web, cites the sources it uses, and can only reach pages it is allowed to crawl. A brand with a thin or inconsistent web presence gives the model nothing solid to retrieve.
That produces one of two failure modes:
- It says it cannot find you. Honest, but you are absent from the answer your buyer is reading.
- It guesses. A language model is built to produce a fluent answer, so it can fill the gap with plausible but wrong details.
We lived the second one. In June 2026, ChatGPT answered “What is Prefer” with fabricated details about our own company. The model was not being malicious; it simply had no reliable source to read, so it invented one.
How to fix it#
The fix is to give ChatGPT accurate, crawlable facts to retrieve, on your own site and on the third-party pages it already trusts. In our case the same question went from a fabrication in June to a cited, accurate answer that referenced tryprefer.com by 2 September 2026. Here is what moved it:
- Publish plain company facts on your own site. A clear about page and consistent naming, what you do, who you serve, where you are based, stated in plain sentences a model can lift.
- Keep those pages crawlable. Do not block OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, and server-render the facts so a crawler that does not run JavaScript still sees them.
- Add Organization schema so machines can parse your identity, not just guess it from prose.
- Earn consistent mentions off-site. Directories, review sites, and editorial coverage that repeat the same facts give the model corroboration from sources it already reads.
- Ship an llms.txt file so AI crawlers have a clean map of the pages that describe you.
None of these promise a specific ranking, and no honest tool can. What they do is remove the reason ChatGPT does not know you: the absence of anything reliable to read.
If you want to see exactly which facts about your brand ChatGPT can and cannot find right now, run a free AI visibility audit and start from the gaps. To go deeper on the mechanics, read how AI chooses which sources to cite and what an llms.txt file does.
