Two different events, measured separately#
A mention names your brand in the answer’s text; a citation links your page as one of the answer’s sources. Prefer reports the two as separate numbers, per engine. They travel together often enough that people blur them, but they are distinct events, and good measurement keeps them apart.
- A mention is the recommendation itself: “For AI visibility, teams often use tools like X, Y, and Z.” Your brand appears in the prose a buyer reads.
- A citation is the footnote: a link to a specific page the engine used as a source, usually shown as a numbered reference or a source chip.
They come apart in both directions. An answer can mention you without citing your site, when the model names you from memory. It can also cite your site without naming your brand, when it lifts a fact from your page to answer a general question. In Prefer’s first GPT-5.6-era ChatGPT run, “mentioned” and “cited” were tracked as separate metrics for exactly this reason.
Tools treat them as separate too. Ahrefs’ Brand Radar reports mentions and citations as distinct metrics, alongside share of voice and impressions. TechRadar’s tracking guide goes further and splits AI visibility into three questions: were you mentioned or cited, did anyone click through, and were you crawled at all.
Why each one is won differently#
A mention is won in the model’s memory; a citation is won on a crawlable page. That is why the split matters for what you do next.
Mentions lean on entity strength: how consistently your brand has been written about across the web, so the model recalls you when it answers from memory. In Prefer’s July 2026 study, ChatGPT skipped live web search on 29 of its 47 answers and replied from memory, citing no sources at all. On those answers, the only way to appear is to already be in the model’s memory. You build that with third-party coverage, reviews, and a clear, consistent brand presence over time.
Citations lean on retrievable content: a page that answers the exact question in extractable prose, is crawlable, and is trusted enough to be pulled as a source. You earn those by publishing clear answer-shaped pages and getting corroboration on the surfaces engines read.
The practical takeaway: measure both, per prompt. Log whether your name appears in the text and whether your domain appears in the sources, and you will see which gap to close, entity work or content work. Our study of who gets cited in AI search shows where those citations actually come from, and tracking your AI citations is how you watch both metrics over time.
