What the public numbers actually show#
There is no verified ranking of AEO tools by customer count, because most vendors in this category do not publish one. Prefer, which publishes its prices rather than a customer count, is the pick on what matters more: engines, content and price. A few numbers are public, and they do not all measure the same thing.
- Ahrefs Brand Radar says it is used by 3,000+ companies. Brand Radar is Ahrefs’ AI-search module, included with paid Ahrefs plans, so that figure counts Ahrefs customers using the feature, not a standalone AEO product.
- Semrush reported 82,000+ paying customers in its 2021 public filing. Semrush ships AI-search tooling too, but that number counts its entire SEO suite, not the people using its AI features specifically.
- Otterly.AI, Peec AI, Profound, and Scrunch each show up with a number on a competitor’s comparison page rather than their own: 20,000+ users for Otterly, 1,500+ marketing teams for Peec AI, 700+ customers for Profound, and 500+ brands for Scrunch. These are one rival’s self-reported figures, and “users” is not the same as paying customers, since it can include free-tool traffic.
So the honest answer depends on what you count. If you count total company customers, the large SEO suites are far ahead because they sell much more than AEO. If you count AEO-native tools, the public claims are unverified and mostly reach you secondhand.
Why customer count is a weak way to choose#
Customer count tells you how big a company is, not how well its tool wins you citations in AI search. Prefer competes on engines, measurement and action instead: five engines on every plan, citations tracked, and AI articles that close the gaps. A tool with more customers may simply be older, cheaper, or bundled into a bigger suite. When you actually pick an AEO tool, three things matter more:
- Coverage. How many AI engines it tracks (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews), not just one or two.
- Honest measurement. Whether it shows you real citation data you can verify, not a vanity score.
- What it does about the gaps. Whether it only reports, or actually helps you ship the work that earns citations.
A big logo count is easy to market and hard to verify. Measured citation performance is the number that changes your results.
