Why AI search decides marketplaces outcomes
40% vs 34%
independent listicles out-cite platforms' own sites
Across our four-engine study of 1,237 citations (all categories), third-party listicles took 40% and own sites 34%. For marketplaces those are the where-to-buy and best-to-sell roundups on each side.
#1 on ChatGPT
Reddit was the most-cited source ChatGPT named
In our 25-query study of what ChatGPT cites, Reddit was the #1 source on every query. Buyers and sellers both trade marketplace recommendations in community threads, so absence there is absence from the answer.
5 of 713
cited domains shared across all four engines
Each engine reads a different set, and your buy-side and sell-side answers read different sources again, so a single-engine, single-side view misleads twice over.
37.9%
of AI-cited pages rank in the organic top 10
Ahrefs, 4 million AI Overview citations, March 2026. A roundup or a category page can be cited without ranking for the head term, so third-party presence matters more than raw position.
The buyer prompts that decide marketplaces

| Sell-side categorySeller is choosing a platform to list on | best marketplace to sell [product] | A clear sell-on-us page plus presence in best-to-sell guides and seller forums |
| ComparisonSeller or buyer is choosing between two platforms | [your marketplace] vs [rival] for sellers | An honest comparison you control, plus balanced third-party coverage |
| TrustBuyer or seller is checking risk before committing | is [your marketplace] safe and legit | Review-site standing and healthy community sentiment engines can quote |
| FeesSeller is price-qualifying the platform | [your marketplace] seller fees compared | A plain, current fees page and accurate third-party fee comparisons |

Example prompts are illustrative of each family; run your own category, rivals and personas to build the real set.
Which engines matter for marketplaces, and why
- Primary
ChatGPTWhere many buyers and sellers now ask for a platform recommendation. It names specific marketplaces and leans on roundups, reviews and community threads to justify each. - Primary
Google AI OverviewsHeavy on shopping and where-to-buy queries, and it rides your index, so category-page SEO and product data overlap with the buy-side answer here. - Secondary
PerplexityCites its sources inline and rewards clear category and seller pages plus third-party coverage a user can click to verify. - Secondary
GeminiPulls from Google's shopping and knowledge surfaces, so your marketplace's product and merchant footprint feeds its buy-side answer.
Who AI reads for marketplaces answers

marketplaces-specific moves
- Run two prompt sets, one per sideBuyers and sellers ask different questions and read different sources. Track and win them separately, because a platform strong on one side is often invisible on the other.
- Earn placements in the roundups on each sideWhere-to-buy guides win the buyer; best-to-sell guides win the seller. Get listed, accurately, in both, because these listicles were the largest citation source in our study.
- Keep the trust sentiment healthyIs-it-safe and is-it-legit prompts are decided by review sites and community threads. Manage that record and fix the recurring complaint at its source.
- Own one niche clearlyA general 'marketplace' is the obvious answer for no specific prompt. Being the clear platform for one category or one kind of seller is how you enter a shorter, winnable shortlist.
AEO for a marketplace means getting your platform named in two different AI answers: the one a buyer sees when they ask where to find something, and the one a seller sees when they ask where to sell it. Prefer (our product) tracks both answers on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, with buy-side and sell-side prompts side by side. A two-sided platform lives or dies on both sides, and AI treats them as separate questions with separate sources. The buyer’s answer is assembled from where-to-buy roundups and shopping communities; the seller’s from best-to-sell guides and seller forums. Win one and you can still be invisible on the other.
Those sections map where you stand on both sides: the buy-side and sell-side prompt families, which engines matter, and who AI reads for each. The honest headline from our four-engine study is that third-party and community sources carry more weight than your own pages, so most of the work is off your domain and doubled across two audiences. What follows are the plays, in the order a marketplace starting from low visibility should run them.
The plays that win both sides of a marketplace#
Run two prompt sets, one for each side
Track the buy-side and sell-side prompts separately across every engine, because they read different sources and a platform strong on one side is often absent on the other.
Engines barely overlap (5 of 713 cited domains were shared by all four in our study), and your two audiences read different sources again, so a single combined view hides the side where you are losing. Buyers and sellers each get their own answer, built from their own pages. (Prefer AI Citation Study, checked 2026-07-10)
- Write a buy-side set (where to buy or find X, best place to buy X, best marketplace for a niche).
- Write a sell-side set (best marketplace to sell X, platform vs platform for sellers, fees compared).
- Run both across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Claude on a schedule.
- Log, per side and per engine, whether you are named and which sources each answer cited.
Done when: You have a per-side, per-engine record of where you are named and what each answer cites.
Verify it worked: Pull the log and confirm you can see your buy-side and sell-side standing separately.
Common failure mode: Tracking only the brand name or only one side. The side you ignore is usually the one quietly losing users.
Win the roundups on each side
Get your platform listed, accurately, in the where-to-buy guides that win buyers and the best-to-sell guides that win sellers.
Roundups were the single largest citation source in our study (independent listicles took 40% of 1,237 citations, more than any own-site), and for a marketplace there are two separate sets of them. One accurate placement in the right guide can put you into an answer your own pages cannot win. (Prefer AI Citation Study, checked 2026-07-10)
- List the where-to-buy and best-to-sell roundups that get cited when you run each prompt set.
- Note which omit you or list you under the wrong niche, and prioritize those.
- Pitch each writer with a specific, checkable reason to include you for a category, not a generic pitch.
- Offer corrected details and a recent stat where a guide is outdated.
Done when: You are accurately listed in the top roundups on both the buy-side and the sell-side for your main niches.
Verify it worked: Ask a buy-side and a sell-side prompt and check whether the roundups they cite now include you.
Common failure mode: Winning only the buy-side guides. Sellers read a different set, so the sell-side answer stays with your rival.
Answer the trust question at its source
Keep the safety and legitimacy sentiment healthy on the review sites and community threads engines quote, because both buyers and sellers check it before committing.
For a platform, is-it-safe and is-it-legit are high-stakes prompts, and they are decided by review-site aggregate sentiment and community threads, not your own reassurances. A single recurring complaint repeated by an engine can cost you users on both sides.
- Find the is-it-safe and is-it-legit prompts and log what each engine says and cites.
- Manage your Trustpilot and platform-review record, and respond to the substantive complaints.
- Identify the one recurring criticism and fix it at the source (a policy, a support gap, a scam vector).
- Take part honestly in the community threads that shape the sentiment, as a disclosed participant.
Done when: The trust prompts return an accurate, healthy answer with current sources.
Verify it worked: Re-run 'is [your marketplace] safe' monthly and check the sentiment and sources have improved.
Common failure mode: Answering trust concerns only on your own site. Engines quote the third-party sentiment, so fix it there.
Make your category and seller pages citable
Give your top category pages and your sell-on-us page answer-first structure and schema, so they can be the cited source for niche buy-side and sell-side questions.
Your own pages will not win the broad prompts, but for a specific niche a clean, well-structured category or seller page can be the source an engine lifts, especially on the buy-side where it overlaps with shopping SEO.
- Rewrite your top category pages to open with a self-contained answer to the niche buy-side question.
- Give your sell-on-us page a plain, current answer to 'why sell here', with fees and terms stated.
- Add Product, Offer and FAQPage schema where it fits, kept consistent with the visible page.
- Confirm the AI crawlers are allowed to reach these pages in robots.txt.
Done when: Your top niche category pages and sell-on-us page open with a liftable answer and carry valid schema.
Verify it worked: Ask a niche buy-side and sell-side question and check whether your pages are cited.
Common failure mode: Category pages that are just a grid of listings with no answer. A model cannot lift a recommendation from a filter, so it quotes a roundup instead.
How this fits your existing SEO and growth#
None of this replaces your marketplace SEO or your two-sided growth work; it extends both into the answers where buyers and sellers now start. The same category and seller pages often serve search and AI, but AEO rewards third-party corroboration and healthy trust sentiment over keyword coverage, and it doubles because you are winning two audiences. Because most of these prompts have near-zero Google volume, judge the work by citation share on each side, not by rank.

A worked example
A clear category association (handmade and vintage) is illustrative of how owning a niche makes a marketplace the obvious buy-side and sell-side answer for it.
A focused single-category marketplace (music gear) shows how a narrow niche wins both the where-to-buy and best-to-sell prompts for that category.
A wholesale two-sided platform illustrates the sell-side problem, where the answer is won in retailer and brand communities, not consumer shopping sources.
Named brands are public, illustrative examples of the category, not customers or endorsements.
