What you cannot buy: the organic answer#
No amount of money puts your brand into ChatGPT’s organic recommendation or citation. When ChatGPT answers “what is the best X” or names sources, it is choosing from the pages it read for that question. There is no rate card for that slot, and OpenAI’s own guidance frames appearing in ChatGPT search as being crawlable and cited, not as something you purchase.
This is the part buyers most often get wrong. The recommendation you actually want, being named as a good option inside the answer, is earned the same way for everyone: by being present and well-regarded across the sources the model trusts. In Prefer’s September 2026 ChatGPT test, the tools that got named were pulled from listicles, review sites, and Reddit threads, not from any advertiser account. No brand bought its way into the organic answer, because that slot is not sold.
What you can pay for: ChatGPT ads#
ChatGPT does have a paid advertising product, and it is separate from the organic answer. OpenAI publishes advertiser guidance and runs a dedicated ads crawler (OAI-AdsBot), and it documents how advertisers build campaigns from a product feed. So the honest, current answer is not a flat “there are no ads.” There are, and they are growing.
The distinction that matters:
- Ads and shopping placements are paid and labeled. They run through an advertiser account and a product feed, and they are marked as sponsored.
- Organic citations are earned and unlabeled. They come from ChatGPT reading and trusting real pages about you.
- Paying for one does not buy the other. An ad does not make the model recommend you in its organic answer, and it is not a citation.
The place buyers most often conflate the two is shopping. ChatGPT shows product results, and some of those come from advertiser product feeds while the organic answer around them is still chosen by the model. If your goal is to be the tool a buyer’s research question recommends, that is the organic answer, and no feed buys it. If your goal is to sell a product inside a shopping result, the paid feed is a real lever. They are different jobs with different budgets, covered plainly in how to appear in ChatGPT search results.
The grey market: buying the sources, not the slot#
A third answer has appeared: services that sell the pages the model reads, rather than the slot itself. Prefer’s September 2026 vendor sweep found done-for-you citation publishing on Reddit, Quora and YouTube openly priced at $399 to $2,499 a month, and agents that place brands on the listicles LLMs pull from. This is not an OpenAI product, and it does not buy the organic answer directly; it launders a brand into the sources the answer is assembled from.
Know two things about that route. First, it is usually undisclosed placement, which is exactly the pattern our research flags in AI tool ranking sites, and platforms and engines actively work against it. Second, it is rented, not owned: seeded posts and paid listicle spots stop working the moment the spend stops or the surface gets discounted, while an earned review or a genuine community answer keeps compounding. Our own off-page work, on Prefer Managed and Enterprise, is disclosed participation and earned press for precisely that reason.
How brands actually earn the organic slot#
Since the recommendation is not for sale, the work is to become the answer the model keeps reading. That means the opposite of buying a placement: make your pages crawlable, publish clear and specific content a model can quote, and earn mentions on the review sites, listicles, and community threads ChatGPT cites.
If you want the ad route, that is a real and legitimate channel, just budget it as advertising and measure it as advertising. If you want the recommendation, that is a visibility and content job. Prefer Managed does the second one as a service, and you can run a free AI visibility audit to see where you stand in organic ChatGPT answers before you spend a cent on ads.
