ChatGPT search ChatGPT reading the live web.
ChatGPT search is ChatGPT's live web search: it searches, reads pages and cites them in the answer. How it works, and how Prefer tracks your citations in it.
ChatGPT search lets ChatGPT search the live web, read pages and cite them in its answer, instead of answering from memory. Prefer tracks which pages it cites for your buyer prompts.
ChatGPT search is the feature that lets ChatGPT search the live web, read pages and cite them in its answer, instead of answering only from what the model learned in training. Prefer tracks which pages ChatGPT search cites for your buyer prompts. When ChatGPT searches, your page can be a cited source; when it answers from memory, there is nothing to be cited in.
How ChatGPT search works#
OpenAI’s help article on ChatGPT search describes the flow: ChatGPT decides when a question needs the web, rewrites it into search queries sent to search partners, reads the results, and cites the sources in its answer.
Behind it sit OpenAI’s crawlers, which OpenAI lists in its crawler documentation:
- OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT’s search features. OpenAI says sites opted out of it “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links.”
- ChatGPT-User visits a page when a user’s request needs it. OpenAI says it “is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search.”
- GPTBot crawls for model training. OpenAI says each setting “is independent of the others,” so blocking GPTBot does not opt you out of search.
OpenAI also notes it can take about 24 hours after a robots.txt change for its search systems to adjust.
Why it matters for AI visibility#
Most answers to real buyer questions are searched, not recalled. In Prefer’s 2 September 2026 run of 50 tracked prompts, 47 ChatGPT answers were grounded in live web search and only 3 short definitional prompts were answered from memory (details). The grounded answers cited 3.8 sources each on average.
That changes what you work on:
- Access is the gate. If OAI-SearchBot is blocked, by a robots.txt rule, a firewall or a blanket bot block, you cannot be cited. See is ChatGPT blocked from my site.
- Readable pages win. The page has to state the answer in plain, server-rendered text that the crawler can read.
- Third-party pages count. ChatGPT search reads review sites, listicles and community threads. Being named there often matters as much as your own page.
- Traffic is trackable. OpenAI’s publishers and developers FAQ says ChatGPT adds
utm_source=chatgpt.comto referral links. See what UTM parameter ChatGPT uses.
Example#
A buyer asks ChatGPT “which payroll tools work for a 15-person company in Texas?” The question is specific and current, so ChatGPT searches. It runs a few queries, reads a comparison article, two vendor pricing pages and a forum thread, then writes a short list with citations. A vendor whose pricing page blocks OAI-SearchBot is not among the pages read, so it is not in the list, even if it is a strong fit.
Common confusions#
- ChatGPT search vs ChatGPT’s memory. An answer from training data has no live sources. Fixing a page can change searched answers within days to weeks; memory refreshes far more slowly (how to correct what ChatGPT says).
- ChatGPT search vs Google ranking. Ranking well on Google helps you be found, but ChatGPT search picks its own sources and only cites a few per answer.
- Search crawler vs training crawler. OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot are separate. Blocking training is a choice; blocking search removes you from answers.
How Prefer helps#
Prefer runs your buyer prompts on ChatGPT, alongside Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and shows whether you are named, which pages each answer cites, and your share of voice against named competitors. Check that OpenAI’s search crawler can reach you with the free Crawler Access Checker.

Questions
Asked plainly.
What is ChatGPT search in simple terms?
It is ChatGPT looking things up on the web while it answers you, then linking the pages it used. Prefer runs your buyer prompts through ChatGPT and shows which pages it cites, so you can see whether your site is one of them.
How do I get my site to appear in ChatGPT search?
First, let OpenAI's search crawler in: OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Prefer's free Crawler Access Checker tells you if your robots.txt allows it, and Prefer's tracking then shows whether ChatGPT actually cites you for the prompts that matter.
Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search?
No, and Prefer's Crawler Access Checker can confirm it for your site. OpenAI documents GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) as independent settings, so you can block one and allow the other. The checker reads each OpenAI crawler separately, so you can see that search is still allowed.
How often does ChatGPT use search?
Often, for real buyer questions. In Prefer's 2 September 2026 run of 50 tracked prompts, 47 of ChatGPT's answers were grounded in live web search and 3 were answered from memory. Prefer keeps tracking those prompts, because the split can change.
