Reviews get you into the sources AI reads#
Reviews affect AI recommendations by getting your brand onto the pages AI cites, especially review sites. When someone asks an engine for the best tool in a category or for alternatives to a product, the engine often pulls from review-site pages that already rank whole categories. G2 is the clearest case: in Prefer’s July 2026 four-engine study it was the fourth most-cited individual domain, with 19 citations. In a separate ChatGPT run, g2.com was cited on 4 of 47 prompts, and specifically for its alternatives and pricing pages, exactly the buyer questions where AI leans on review content.
Getting into that surface is not automatic. A claimed G2 profile with zero reviews does not appear on G2’s own category pages, and if it is not on the category page, AI does not cite it. G2 needs about 10 reviews before a profile shows on category listings and becomes a citation surface at all. So the review motion, not just claiming the profile, is what turns reviews into AI visibility.
This is why “collect real reviews on the sites AI reads” is genuine AEO work, not vanity. The reviews build the page that gets cited.
But reviews support your case, they do not decide it#
Review sites are a real but minority source of AI citations, so treat reviews as one lever, not the whole game. In the same study, review sites like G2 were only about 3% of all 1,237 citations. Far more citations went to independent listicles, established media, and vendors’ own pages. If you optimize only your review profiles, you are competing for a small slice of the answer.
Two honest caveats:
- Reviews feed the lists AI quotes. Engines rarely quote a star rating directly. They lift the ranked shortlists and pros-and-cons that review sites publish, and those are shaped by your rating and volume. Higher-rated, well-reviewed profiles are more likely to be quoted favorably.
- Reviews rarely send the click. A review-site citation usually recommends you inside someone else’s page. It builds the mention and the entity signal; it does not, on its own, make your site the cited source.
The balanced play: run an honest review motion on the sites your buyers and AI both read (G2 first for B2B software, then Capterra and TrustRadius), and pair it with your own answer-shaped pages and third-party coverage so you are present across the whole answer, not just the 3% that is review sites.
