What nine answers named, and what holds#
We make Prefer, a competing AI visibility tool, so read this as a rival’s check. We asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity “What are the downsides of Profound?” three times each on 13 September 2026, then checked them against Profound’s pages.
Nine answers were about the software. The other three described a skin treatment called Profound RF or asked which Profound we meant.
| Downside, as coded | Answers, of 9 | What Profound’s pages showed, 16 to 18 September | Our read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | 9 | No published price for a paid brand plan | Needs a quote to check |
| Enterprise focus | 9 | Enterprise is the only paid plan on the brands tab | Holds |
| Limited engines at entry tier | 8 | Trial: one engine. Enterprise: up to 9. No brand plan between | Holds |
| Limited action/optimization | 8 | Agents draft articles and publish approved content to your CMS | Partly holds |
| Learning curve | 7 | We did not test the product | Not checked |
| Reporting flexibility | 4 | Enterprise lists CSV and JSON exports and an API; untested | Not checked |
The two downsides that hold are about access: a small free trial, then a custom quote. Prefer publishes its brand prices instead, from $24 a month, and its free trial covers all five engines it tracks.
What was out of date, and what was wrong#
Two answers said the practical start was the $399 Growth plan, not the $99 Starter. That matched a Wayback Machine copy of the page from 14 September; today $399 appears only on the agencies tab.
One Claude answer said pricing ran “from $399 to custom enterprise only” and “there is no free trial and no self-serve tier”. That did not match its own week: the 14 September copy showed a self-serve $99 Starter and a “Try for free” button on Growth. By 16 September the brands tab listed a free trial.
Another Claude answer called Profound a monitoring tool with “no CMS integration, no schema fixes, no content execution”. Profound’s Agents page says agents “Generate complete articles from a topic prompt” and publish approved content to your CMS. An archived copy from 28 August says the same. We could not check the schema claim. What holds: four answers (all three ChatGPT, one Claude) said the decisions and much of the work stay with your team, and Profound’s page adds an approval step before anything publishes.
Most cited pages came from competitors#
The 88 on-topic citations pointed to 40 distinct pages. Of those citations, 59 (67%) went to companies that sell competing tools, as we coded them. None pointed to Profound’s own site. We are one more, which is why the table shows Profound’s own pages.
What Profound does well#
Asked for alternatives to Peec AI in the same study, all 12 answers named Profound, 10 of them first. Its Enterprise plan lists up to nine engines, daily tracking, an API, SSO and SOC 2. Prompt Volumes draws on what Profound calls “1.5 billion+ real AI conversations”, and Agent Analytics reads AI crawler visits from server logs.
How to check a downside before you trust it#
- Check the date on every price against both tabs of Profound’s pricing page. Done when every figure you rely on matches the live page (how much Profound costs).
- Check who wrote the review. Done when you have marked each source that sells a competing tool, this page included.
- Judge the learning curve in a demo on your own prompts. The trial’s prompt set is fixed by industry, so ask for a demo with the person who would use Profound daily. Done when they can read the results without help.
- Ask sales what we could not check. Are Agents included on Enterprise by default? How many agent credits come with it? Does Profound deploy schema or technical fixes? Done when each has a written answer. Weigh any unanswered one as a risk.
- Decide on the quote. If the Enterprise quote is above your budget, the access downsides settle it: compare cheaper alternatives to Profound. Done when you hold a signable quote or a shortlist.
Disclosure: we make Prefer, a competing AI visibility tool, so we have a stake in how you read this list. For a baseline to set beside the trial, run a free AI visibility audit.

- Across 12 answers to 'What are the downsides of Profound?' from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity (three runs each, 13 September 2026), nine discussed the AI visibility software. Two Gemini answers covered only Profound RF, a skin treatment (one also covered Profound Medical's prostate procedure), a third Gemini answer covered both the treatment and the software, and one Claude answer only asked which Profound was meant. - Prefer, our product, competes with Profound and publishes its prices: Starter is $24 a month with 30 tracked prompts and 15 AI articles, every plan tracks five engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode), and every paid plan starts with a 7-day free trial with no card, capped at 30 prompts. We have a commercial stake in how you weigh Profound's downsides. Prefer pricing (our product)

- In a rendered browser check of tryprofound.com/pricing on 23 September 2026, the brands tab listed a free Trial (50 prompts run daily for 7 days, on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, one language and one region, no history, exports, API or support) and Enterprise at a custom price (up to 9 answer engines, daily tracking, all-time history, CSV and JSON exports, API, SSO/SAML and SOC 2). The agencies tab listed Agency Growth at $99 a month, with one extra client workspace at $399 a month. A rendered check on 23 August 2026 had recorded Starter at $99 and Growth at $399 on the brands side. - Two answers put the practical starting point at $399 a month while naming the $99 Starter: one Claude answer ('real functionality starts at $399/month, not the $99 Starter plan') and one Perplexity answer ('the $99 plan is limited, and the practical starting point is often the $399 tier'). Another Claude answer said 'pricing is from $399 to custom enterprise only' and 'there is no free trial and no self-serve tier'.
