The short answer

Which LLMs do AEO tools monitor?

Prefer tracks five on every plan from $24 a month: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Most tools gate engines by tier: Profound's trial covers three of its nine engines, Otterly sells Claude and Gemini as add-ons, and Scrunch's $250 Core covers four of nine.

Key takeaways

  • Prefer, our product, tracks the same five engines on every plan (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode) from $24 a month, with no per-engine add-ons. Prefer Enterprise adds every other AI model you need, such as Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, Meta AI, DeepSeek and Qwen. (Prefer pricing (our product))
  • Rendered pricing checks (August to September 2026): Otterly's every tier covers ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot with Claude, Gemini and AI Mode as add-ons from $9 to $439 a month; Scrunch's Core covers four engines with nine on Enterprise; AthenaHQ's free tier covers five models and its $295 Starter ten on 6 September and 11 on 19 September. (Prefer: AI visibility tool pricing, 11 tools verified)
  • Otterly's add-on engine prices (Claude at $29 to $439 a month by tier; Gemini and AI Mode at $9 to $149) were verified in a rendered browser on 5 September 2026. (Prefer research note: Otterly review research (2026-09-05))
  • Semrush's own toolkit FAQ (rendered 6 September 2026) names three platforms, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, with more that 'may be added', while its knowledge base documented five at our August check and gates Claude and Copilot to Enterprise. (Prefer research note: Semrush AI Toolkit review research (2026-09-06))
  • Profound's pricing page, read in a rendered browser on 23 September 2026, offers brands a free Trial (50 prompts run daily for 7 days, on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews) and Enterprise at a custom price with 'up to 9 Answer Engines tracked'. An agency client workspace tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. A Wayback Machine capture from 14 September 2026 still showed brand plans at $99 (ChatGPT only) and $399 (3 engines). (Prefer research note: How much does Profound cost (2026-09-18))
  • Peec AI's pricing page, read in a rendered browser on 16 September 2026: each self-serve plan includes 3 models, each extra model costs $30 (Starter), $70 (Pro) or $140 (Advanced) a month, and Enterprise lists up to 13 models. A Wayback copy of the page from 8 September 2026 lists six models on the self-serve menu: ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and Gemini. The homepage list is not the entry-plan list#

Almost every AI visibility tool advertises broad engine coverage, and almost every entry plan includes less of it. Prefer includes the same five engines on every plan, from Starter up. From rendered pricing checks between August and September 2026, here is what the tier you would actually buy includes:

  • Profound: ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews on the free trial (50 prompts, daily for 7 days); up to nine engines on Enterprise, at a custom price. Its agency client workspaces track three: ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
  • Otterly: four engines on every tier (ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot) from $29; Claude, Gemini and AI Mode are paid add-ons, from $9 up to $439 a month depending on tier and engine.
  • Scrunch: four engines on the $250 Core plan; nine, including Claude and Gemini, on custom Enterprise.
  • AthenaHQ: five models on the free tier; 11, including Claude, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral, on the $295 Starter (19 September).
  • Peec AI: 3 models on each self-serve plan, chosen from a menu of six. On 19 September that menu was ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot, Naver AI and Gemini, so Perplexity and Claude sat on Enterprise (Perplexity was on the 8 September menu). Each extra model costs $30 to $140 a month by tier, and Enterprise lists 14 models against a card that says up to 13.
  • Semrush AI Toolkit: five engines on Semrush’s own plan comparison (ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini), though its product FAQ named three on 6 September; Claude, Copilot, Grok and DeepSeek sit on Enterprise.
  • AirOps: ChatGPT only on the free Solo tier; multi-engine on Pro, with no published prices at all.
  • Ahrefs Brand Radar: seven surfaces for your own prompts, bundled with paid Ahrefs plans, Claude among them only there; its AI Visibility Index covers six, at $199 a month per platform.

Prefer, our product, covers five engines on every paid plan (ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity), with every other model you need, Claude and Copilot included, on Enterprise, and we publish our prices; that is a deliberate position against engine-gating, and you should weigh it with the same skepticism as every claim above.

How to read an engine list#

Ask one question: which engines are included at the price I will actually pay? Then confirm it against the vendor’s live pricing page rather than the homepage, because the two lists routinely differ, and in this category pricing structures have changed mid-quarter. Every figure above carries a checked date in the verified pricing index, and the engine gates are scored per tool in our reviews. Which AI engines do AI visibility tools track?

Prefer tracks five on every plan from $24 a month: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Most tools gate engines by tier: Profound's trial covers three of its nine engines, Otterly sells Claude and Gemini as add-ons, and Scrunch's $250 Core covers four of nine.

Which AI engines does Prefer track?

Prefer tracks five on every plan: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, from $24 a month with no per-engine add-ons. Prefer Enterprise adds every other AI model you need, such as Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, Meta AI, DeepSeek and Qwen.

Which tools cover Claude at the entry price?

Prefer, our product, adds Claude on Enterprise; its paid plans cover ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. Across the category, fewer tools include Claude at entry than the homepages imply, as of September 2026. AthenaHQ includes Claude from its $295 Starter (not its free tier). Otterly sells Claude as an add-on from $29 to $439 a month by tier, Scrunch and Semrush gate it to Enterprise, and Profound's free trial runs on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, with the full engine list on custom Enterprise.

Is more engines always better?

No, and Prefer includes the same five (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode) on every plan, so the engine count never changes with the price. Coverage only matters for the engines your buyers actually use, and passing mentions differ from recommendations. A tool tracking four engines your customers use daily beats one tracking ten engines nobody in your market asks. Weight engines-per-dollar at the tier you can afford, for the engines that matter to you.

Why do vendors gate engines by tier?

Prefer does not gate them: the same five engines on every plan, with tiers priced on prompts. Most vendors do because each tracked engine costs real money per prompt per day, so engines became the upsell meter alongside prompts and credits. That is why the same product can honestly advertise nine engines and honestly sell you four: both lists are true, at different prices.
