Many searches never get an AI Overview#
Google says AI Overviews appear only when its systems judge them “additive to classic Search”, so they “often don’t trigger”. Prefer tracks whether the AI Overviews on your tracked searches cite you. In Pew Research’s March 2025 data from US adults, 18% of Google searches produced an AI summary. Only 8% of one- or two-word searches did (a share of searches, not clicks), against 60% of those starting with a question word such as “why”.
| Reason | What Google documents |
|---|---|
| The query does not qualify | Shown only when judged additive to classic Search |
| Your country or language | Available to all users in listed countries and 98 languages |
| The Web filter is on | Shows “only text-based links without features like AI Overviews” |
| Hard news or health | Aims “to not show AI Overviews for hard news topics”; health got “triggering refinements” (2024) |
What the AI answers get wrong#
Prefer asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity three times each on 13 September 2026 and captured Google’s US results that day.
Five of the 12 answers made age 18 a condition. Google’s AI Overviews help page names no age rule. Google’s Workspace help says students under 18 on school accounts get them in most countries. The 18-and-over rules we found are for Search Labs and AI Mode features.
Seven answers pointed to Search Labs settings. Google calls Labs a testbed for new experiments, not a requirement, contradicting one Gemini answer: “In some regions, AI Overviews still require opting in via Google Search Labs.” Five pointed to Web & App Activity, which the help page does not contradict but never mentions.
The top organic result was a community thread whose recommended answer, from a Platinum Product Expert, lists Web & App Activity, account type and age 18 as checks for Search Labs access. Perplexity cited it in all three answers, and Google’s AI Overview cited it for this line: “Your Google account must be set to age 18 or older.” A user on another thread notes that product experts are “volunteers, not Google employees.” So the age rule these answers repeat rests on forum replies, the top one about Search Labs, not on Google’s AI Overviews documentation.
Only one of the 12 answers mentioned the site owner’s version of the question, and only as a closing offer.
If your page is missing from the AI Overview#
Together, two Google documents set three conditions: the page is indexed and eligible for a snippet, and the site is included in Search Console’s generative AI control. They disagree slightly: the older one (December 2025) says there are “no additional technical requirements”; the July 2026 guide adds the Search Console setting, which reached every site by 31 August 2026. Include is the default, but a property can inherit Exclude from a parent. Google adds that “Indexing and serving isn’t guaranteed.”
How to check, step by step#
- Search a full question in a private window, on the All tab. Site owners, use your target query. Done when you see an AI Overview, or find your country or language missing from Google’s list. If neither, try several questions before blaming your account: in Pew’s data, 4 in 10 question-word searches got no summary.
- Repeat it in your normal window. Done when you know whether the gap is your account or the query. Google documents no fix for an account problem; the fixes forums and AI answers suggest (extensions or VPN off, another account) are unverified.
- Inspect the page in Search Console. Done when it is indexed, no noindex, nosnippet or tight max-snippet appears in the HTML or an X-Robots-Tag header, and your key passages sit outside data-nosnippet.
- Open Settings, then Search generative AI. Done when the property, or the parent it inherits from, is set to Include.
- Open the Generative AI performance report. Done when you know which pages get AI Overview and AI Mode impressions. No report? Google’s reasons are no access yet, too few impressions, or an excluded site. For winning the citation itself, see how to appear in Google AI Overviews.
