AI Overview Google's AI summary above the results.
An AI Overview is the AI summary Google shows above some search results, with links to its sources. How it works, and how Prefer tracks who it cites.

An AI Overview is the AI-written summary Google shows at the top of some search results pages, with links to the pages it drew on. Prefer tracks which pages AI Overviews cite for your buyer searches, alongside AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. For many searches the AI Overview is now the first thing a buyer reads, before any blue link.
How an AI Overview works#
Google launched AI Overviews in the US in May 2024, after testing it as an experiment in Search Labs. Google Search Central says AI Overviews only appear when its systems judge one is additive to classic Search, and that they may use query fan-out: several related searches across subtopics, run behind the scenes, before the summary is written.

How an AI Overview is built
To be a supporting link, Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. It lists no additional technical requirements, and its AI optimization guide says no special schema.org markup is needed.
Why AI Overviews matter for AI visibility#
When a summary answers the search, fewer people click the regular results. Pew Research found people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one. That pushes value toward being cited inside the summary itself, which is the shift behind zero-click search.
Ranking and citation are not the same thing. In Prefer’s 18 September 2026 capture of 80 questions, AI Overviews cited 679 pages; 40% ranked in the organic top 10 for that search and 44% were in no organic result Google served. The full method is on do you need page one for AI Overviews.
A concrete example#
Search “how to choose a payroll provider for a small business.” An AI Overview may summarize the main criteria in a few lines and link to a comparison article, a vendor guide and a forum thread. If your guide is not one of those links, the buyer may never scroll down to your organic listing, even if it ranks well.
Common confusions#
- AI Overview vs featured snippet. A featured snippet quotes one page. An AI Overview writes a new summary and can link to many pages.
- AI Overview vs AI Mode. AI Mode is a full conversational search you open yourself. Google says the two may use different models and techniques, so their links vary. Prefer’s comparison is on AI Overviews vs AI Mode.
- “I can’t see one, so it’s broken.” Google shows AI Overviews only in the languages and countries it lists in its help page, and only when it judges them helpful.
Controls site owners have#
Google’s robots meta tag rules say nosnippet and max-snippet apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Search Console also has a Search generative AI control that can exclude a site. Both reduce your chance of being cited, so use them only on purpose.
What to do next#
- Check that your key pages are indexed and snippet-eligible in Search Console.
- Find the searches where AI Overviews cite competitors and not you.
- Rewrite those pages so each section opens with a plain, quotable answer.
- Earn mentions on the third-party pages AI Overviews already cite.
How Prefer helps#
Prefer tracks AI Overviews on every plan, and shows the sources behind each one, plus your share of voice against named competitors. Its Search Console integration (from Starter) puts that next to your organic data. To see where you stand today, try the free AI Visibility Checker or run a free AI visibility audit.

Questions
Asked plainly.
What is a Google AI Overview in simple terms?
It is the short AI-written answer Google places above the normal results for some searches, with links to the pages it used. Prefer tracks AI Overviews on every plan, next to AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and shows which pages they cite for your buyer searches. Google only shows one when its systems judge it helpful, so many searches never get one.
How do I get my page cited in an AI Overview?
Start by seeing which pages AI Overviews already cite for your searches; Prefer lists them. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, with no extra technical requirements and no special schema needed. From there, write clear passages that answer the question directly and keep your facts current.
Do I need to rank on page one to appear in an AI Overview?
No. In Prefer's 18 September 2026 capture, 40% of the 679 pages cited in 75 AI Overviews ranked in the organic top 10 for that search, and 44% were in no organic result Google served. Ranking well still helps, but it is not a requirement.
How is an AI Overview different from AI Mode?
An AI Overview appears on its own above some results; AI Mode is a conversational search you choose to open. Prefer tracks both, because they often cite different pages: in Prefer's September 2026 test, only 32% of AI Mode's sources also appeared in the AI Overview for the same question.
Can I stop Google using my content in AI Overviews?
Yes, with limits. Prefer can show you whether AI Overviews cite you before you decide. Google's nosnippet and max-snippet rules limit how your content is used in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Search Console has a Search generative AI control to exclude a site, but blocking also removes your chance to be cited.
