Google shows AI Overviews itself; you open AI Mode#
| What differs | AI Overview | AI Mode |
|---|---|---|
| How it starts | Shown when Google judges it “additive to classic Search” | You tap it after a search, or on the Google app home screen |
| What Google says it is for | Getting “to the gist” of a topic quickly | ”further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons” |
| How it searches | May use query fan-out | Splits your question into subtopics and searches each at once |
| Follow-up questions | Continue in AI Mode | Built in, with context kept |
Google says the two “may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary.”
In 2026 Google linked the two#
A follow-up question to an AI Overview now continues in AI Mode. Google added this in January 2026. At I/O in May 2026 it said it was bringing AI Overviews and AI Mode “into one” AI Search experience, live worldwide.
They cite different pages#
On 13 September 2026 Prefer captured both for the 80 questions in our September AI answer study. AI Mode returned an answer for 76 of them.
On the 69 questions where both cited sources, only 132 of the 408 pages AI Mode cited (32%) also appeared in the AI Overview. On 15 of the 69 they shared no page at all. From the AI Overview’s side it was 22%; across every page either one cited, 15%. Ahrefs, measuring differently across 540,000 query pairs in 2025, found 13.7%.
| Measure (13 September 2026) | AI Overview | AI Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Answers with sources, of 80 questions | 75 | 74 |
| Sources per answer, median | 8 | 4 |
| Had more sources, of 69 questions with both | 51 | 16 |
| Answers citing YouTube | 38 of 75 | 51 of 76 |
What AI answers got wrong#
We asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the difference three times each on 13 September 2026 (via API, web search on). All 12 got the basics: where each appears, and one answer versus a conversation.
All three Gemini answers missed the 2026 change. They said following up on an AI Overview is limited or needs a new search, months after Google added follow-ups. All three ChatGPT answers described the path into AI Mode, and two Claude answers reported the May announcement. Two Gemini answers also said AI Mode cites more sources per answer. In our capture it cited fewer on 51 of 69 questions, counting the source lists our data provider returned. Otterly’s German data, which totals citations over repeated runs, points the other way.
Google’s own AI Mode said AI Overviews “extract details directly from the top-ranking web pages for your specific query.” In the same capture, 41% of AI Overview sources were page-one results (do you need page one?).
How to track both#
- Check your site is included in both. In Search Console, Settings, then Search generative AI, one control covers AI Overviews and AI Mode. Done when it says Include.
- Open the Generative AI performance report. Its help page lists AI Overviews and AI Mode as included and groups data by page, country, date and device, with no split by feature. Done when you know which pages get any impressions.
- Record the sources each one cites. Prefer does this on every plan. By hand, search each buyer question you track signed out (AI Mode personalizes for signed-in users with history on), on the same day, device and country for both. Note the sources each one cites. If no AI Overview shows, record that: 5 of our 80 questions had none. Repeat weekly; only 289 of 602 AI Overview sources in our test (each page counted once per question) were cited again five days later. Where you appear in only one, note which page, and which part of the question, the other cites instead. Done when each question has two dated lists.
Disclosure: Prefer tracks AI citations, Google’s included, so we have a stake in how you measure this. To see where you appear, run a free AI visibility audit.
