The short answer

Do you have to rank in the top 10 to be cited in an AI Overview?

No. Of 679 pages cited in 75 Google AI Overviews Prefer captured on 18 September 2026, 40% ranked in the organic top 10 for that search and 44% were in no organic result Google served. Google requires indexing and snippet eligibility, not a ranking. Prefer tracks which pages AI Overviews cite for your queries.

Key takeaways

  • On 18 September 2026 (UTC) we ran the 80 questions from our September AI answer study through Google (US English, desktop) and captured every organic result Google served, up to 100, alongside the AI Overview. 79 captures succeeded and 75 AI Overviews cited 679 pages. By organic position for the same search: 107 ranked 1 to 3, 162 ranked 4 to 10, 58 ranked 11 to 20, 56 ranked 21 to 100, and 296 were not in the organic results Google served. That is 39.6% in the top 10, 48.2% in the top 20 and 43.6% not in any organic result Google served. Depth matters: Google served 15 to 99 organic results per search (median 58), and on the 11 searches where it served 90 or more, 25.0% of cited pages were not found and 17.4% ranked 21 to 100. (Prefer research note: AI Overviews questions (2026-09-19), section 2)
  • In the same capture, 74 of the 75 AI Overviews cited at least one page ranking in the top 10, yet only 19 of the 75 drew more than half their sources from the top 10. The median AI Overview drew 36% of its sources from the top 10. (Prefer research note: AI Overviews questions (2026-09-19), section 2)
  • In our 13 September 2026 study capture of the same questions, 268 of 648 pages cited in 75 AI Overviews (41.4%) were also among the page-one organic results for that search (6 to 9 organic results per search). (Prefer research note: AI Overviews questions (2026-09-19), section 1)
  • Ahrefs' March 2026 update, covering 863,000 keyword results pages and 4 million AI Overview URLs, found 37.1% of cited pages in the organic top 10 and 36.7% outside the top 100 when counting organic listings only. Its earlier study, from July 2025 data, had put the top-10 share at about 76%. (Ahrefs, Update: 38% of AI Overview Citations Pull From The Top 10 (2 March 2026))
  • Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that there are no additional technical requirements. Both features may use a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources. (Google Search Central, AI features and your website (updated 10 December 2025))
  • Asked this question three times each on 13 September 2026 (via API, web search on), 11 of 12 answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity said page one helps but is not required; the twelfth, from Perplexity, said being on page one 'appears to be the strongest prerequisite for frequent AI Overview inclusion'. Across this and two related questions, the share of AI Overview citations they said comes from the top 10 ranged from 35 to 40% up to 92%. Two of Perplexity's three answers said most AI Overview citations come from page one or the top organic results. Asked how to rank in AI Overviews, two Claude answers called a top-10 ranking 'the non-negotiable prerequisite' and gave 76% with no source named. (Prefer research note: AI Overviews questions (2026-09-19), section 5)

Fewer than half of AI Overview sources rank in the top 10#

In Prefer’s test of 80 searches, fewer than half the pages Google’s AI Overviews cited ranked in the top 10 for the same search. On 18 September 2026 we ran the 80 questions from our September AI answer study through Google (US English, desktop) with up to 100 organic results each: 75 AI Overviews cited 679 pages.

Where the cited page rankedPagesShare
Positions 1 to 310715.8%
Positions 4 to 1016223.9%
Positions 11 to 20588.5%
Positions 21 to 100568.2%
Not in any organic result Google served29643.6%

Google served 15 to 99 organic results per search (median 58), so the last two rows depend on depth: on the 11 searches with 90 or more, 25% of cited pages were in none of them and 17% ranked 21 to 100.

Page one helps, but it is not required#

74 of the 75 AI Overviews cited at least one top-10 page, but only 19 drew most of their sources from the top 10.

Ahrefs (March 2026, 4 million cited URLs) found 37.1% in the organic top 10 and 36.7% outside the top 100, down from about 76% in its July 2025 data.

Google’s conditions: indexed, eligible for a snippet, and not excluded in Search Console’s generative AI setting. A ranking position is not among them.

11 of 12 AI answers said page one is not required#

We asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity this question three times each on 13 September 2026 (via API, web search on). Across this question and two related ones, the top-10 share they quoted ranged from 35 to 40% up to 92%. Two Claude answers on ranking in AI Overviews called the top 10 “the non-negotiable prerequisite” and gave 76% with no source (Ahrefs’ July 2025 figure was also 76%).

Google’s own AI Overview for this question on 18 September said “About 76% to 95% of AI Overview citations originate from the top 10 organic search results.” Only 4 of its 12 sources ranked there. Three of the four behind that sentence were not in the 47 results served.

What to do if you are not on page one#

  1. Confirm the page can be cited. URL Inspection shows it indexed with no nosnippet or tight max-snippet rule, and Search Console’s Settings, then Search generative AI, says Include. Done when all three hold; fix failures first (why an AI Overview is not showing).
  2. Record who gets cited, again and again. Prefer records the cited pages for you. By hand, search the buyer questions you track (start with 10 to 50) and list every page each AI Overview cites, with its position. Only 289 of 602 pages in our test (each page counted once per question) were cited again five days later. Done when every cited page has a position or “not ranking”.
  3. Match the passages. Open each cited page, copy the passage the Overview paraphrases and note the sub-question it answers. For each one your H2s miss, add a question-shaped H2 on your existing page, answered in its first sentence. Google warns that separate content for fan-out queries made “primarily to manipulate rankings or generative AI responses” breaks its scaled content abuse policy. Done when every sub-question has an H2.
  4. Check sources outside the organic results. Of those 296 cited pages, 47 were YouTube videos, 20 Reddit threads and 15 LinkedIn pages. When the Overview cites those over competitor pages, answer the sub-question on that platform under your own name. Done when each has your answer there; skip closed or off-topic threads.
  5. Watch the Generative AI performance report. Its help page lists both features and groups data by page, country, date and device, not by feature. Google says crawling can take days to months. Done when the page shows impressions; if none appear after a few months, repeat steps 2 and 3.

Updated 19 September 2026

Do I need to rank on page one to appear in AI Overviews?

Does ranking higher still help?

Yes. In Prefer's capture the top three positions drew 107 citations, more per position than positions 4 to 10 (162 across seven) or 11 to 20 (58 across ten). seoClarity found position one cited 43% of the time, falling to 7% at position 20.

Why do AI Overviews cite pages outside the organic results?

Google says AI Overviews may use query fan-out, running related searches on subtopics, which Google says lets it show 'a wider and more diverse set of helpful links' than a classic web search. That is part of why 296 of the 679 pages in Prefer's capture were in no organic result Google served. Ahrefs linked its own drop from about 76% to 38% partly to fan-out and partly to better parsing. In our capture, 16 of the 296 cited pages outside the organic results appeared elsewhere on the same results page, such as a video pack.

Do AI Overview sources change over time?

Yes, a lot. In Prefer's captures across 70 questions, 602 pages were cited on 13 September 2026, counting each page once per question, and 289 of them (48%) were cited again for the same question five days later. Over those five days the share of sources on page one moved from 41.4% to 36.4%.
