A featured snippet is a short passage that Google lifts from a single web page and shows in a box above the regular search results, with a link to that page. Prefer tracks the AI answers that now often sit above the snippet, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode alongside ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and shows which pages they cite. The snippet itself is older and simpler: it quotes, it does not write.

Google’s documentation says its systems determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a search and, if so, elevate it. There is no markup that requests one. The page has to be indexed and eligible to show a normal snippet, and the passage has to answer the query cleanly.

A snippet can be a paragraph, a list or a table. Clicking it often scrolls the reader straight to the quoted text on the source page.

The two look similar on the results page but work differently:

  • A featured snippet quotes one page. One passage, one link, nothing generated.
  • An AI Overview writes a new answer. It summarises several sources and can link to many of them. Our AI Overviews guide covers the full difference, including AI Mode.

They also pick sources differently. Prefer captured 75 Google AI Overviews on 18 September 2026 and found only 40% of the 679 cited pages ranked in the organic top 10 for that search, and 44% were in no organic result Google served. The details are in our answer on whether you need page one for AI Overviews.

Featured snippets are a zero-click feature: the reader often gets the answer without visiting. AI answers push that further. What carries over is the skill. A page that wins a snippet usually has a passage that answers one question in one or two plain sentences, and that is the same kind of passage AI engines lift and cite.

There is also a direct technical link. Google says that to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, and that the same snippet controls limit what it shows in AI features.

Opting out, and why to think twice#

Google gives three controls. The nosnippet rule blocks all snippets, including featured ones. The data-nosnippet attribute hides specific text. A low max-snippet value makes a featured snippet less likely, with no guarantee.

Some publishers block snippets to protect clicks. In AI search that trade is riskier, because the same controls can keep your page out of the AI answer that replaced the click.

Example#

A made-up example: someone searches “how long does a domain transfer take”. A featured snippet shows two sentences from one registrar’s help page: “Most transfers finish in five to seven days. You can speed this up by approving the transfer email.” An AI Overview on the same search might blend that registrar, a hosting company and a forum thread into one answer with three links. The registrar that wrote the clearest two sentences has the best shot at both.

Common confusions#

  • Not a rich result. Rich results come from structured data. Featured snippets need no markup.
  • Not People Also Ask. People Also Ask is the expandable list of related questions, each with its own short answer.
  • Not position one. The snippet can come from a page that is not the top organic result.

How Prefer helps#

Prefer tracks how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode answer your buyer prompts, and shows the sources behind each answer. It writes content built around short, quotable answers on every self-serve plan. Run a free AI visibility audit to see which pages the engines cite in your category today.

Questions

Asked plainly.

What is a featured snippet in simple terms?

It is a short passage Google copies from one web page and shows in a box near the top of the results, with a link to that page. Prefer focuses on the AI answers that now often appear above it, such as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and shows which pages they cite. A featured snippet does not write anything new; it quotes.

Is a featured snippet the same as an AI Overview?

No. Prefer tracks AI Overviews as one of its five engines because they behave differently: an AI Overview writes a fresh summary from several pages and links a handful of them, while a featured snippet quotes one page word for word with one link. The two can appear on the same results page.

How do I get my page into a featured snippet?

You cannot force it, because Google decides which pages to elevate. Prefer helps with the part you control for AI answers: it shows which pages engines cite for your prompts and writes content built around clear, quotable answers. For snippets, answer the question in the first sentence or two of a section, under a heading that matches the question, and keep the page indexed and eligible for a snippet.

Does blocking featured snippets affect AI Overviews?

It can. Prefer's advice is to check this before you add any snippet controls: Google says nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex also limit what it shows from your pages in its AI features, and a page must be eligible for a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Blocking snippets to protect clicks can also take you out of the AI answer.
