Search Generative Experience was Google's 2023 Search Labs experiment that put AI-generated answers at the top of search, and the forerunner of AI Overviews. Prefer tracks AI Overviews today.
Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google’s 2023 experiment that placed AI-generated answers at the top of search results, and the direct forerunner of AI Overviews. Prefer tracks the products SGE turned into, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, alongside ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
What SGE was#
Google announced SGE on May 10, 2023 as an opt-in experiment in Search Labs, available first in the US, in English, on Chrome desktop and the Google app. Instead of a list of links, it showed an AI-generated snapshot that pulled a complex question together, with links to the pages behind it. Google’s example was a family comparing two national parks with young kids and a dog: a question that used to take several searches. Google also said it limited the types of queries where SGE would appear.
What happened to it#
A year later, at I/O on May 14, 2024, Google said AI Overviews would begin rolling out to everyone in the US, with more countries to follow, and pointed to billions of queries already run in Search Labs testing. In practice, SGE stopped being an opt-in experiment and became a default part of Google Search under the AI Overview name. Google later added AI Mode, a separate conversational search tab built on the same ideas.
Why it still matters#
The name is retired, but SGE marked the moment the top of Google’s results page started to be written by a model. That changed what “ranking” means. A page can rank on the first page and still not be one of the sources the AI answer cites, and a buyer can get their answer without clicking at all, which is the zero-click effect. Much of today’s advice on AI Overviews was first written as “SGE optimization.”
Google’s current guidance is that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and that SEO fundamentals still apply. It also says both features use query fan-out, running several related searches to build one answer, which is why they can cite pages that do not rank first for the original query.
Common confusions#
- SGE is not a separate product today. If someone says “optimize for SGE,” they mean AI Overviews.
- SGE is not the same as AI Mode. AI Overviews sit inside regular results; AI Mode is its own conversational experience. Our answer on AI Overviews vs AI Mode explains the difference.
- SGE was not Bard or Gemini. Those were Google’s chat assistants; SGE was an experiment inside Search.
How Prefer helps#
Prefer tracks whether Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode mention your brand on your buyer prompts, which pages they cite instead, and how your share of voice compares with named competitors. If your AI Overview isn’t appearing at all, our answer on why an AI Overview is not showing covers the common causes. Run a free AI visibility audit to see how Google’s AI answers about you today.

Questions
Asked plainly.
What was Google SGE?
SGE, short for Search Generative Experience, was an opt-in experiment Google announced in May 2023 that showed AI-generated summaries above the regular results. Prefer tracks its successors, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, alongside ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. SGE ran in Search Labs, starting in the US in English.
Is SGE the same as AI Overviews?
AI Overviews is what the SGE experiment grew into. Prefer tracks AI Overviews as one of the five engines on every plan. Google began rolling AI Overviews out to everyone in the US in May 2024, so the SGE label is now historical.
Does SGE still exist?
Not under that name. Prefer, like most of the industry, tracks the live products instead: AI Overviews in regular results and AI Mode as a separate conversational search. Older articles about SGE optimization usually apply to AI Overviews with small changes.
How do I get cited in Google's AI answers?
Google says there are no extra technical requirements beyond normal SEO, so start with pages that are indexable and answer questions plainly. Prefer then shows which pages AI Overviews and AI Mode cite for your buyer prompts, so you can see who wins the citation and what their page does differently.
