Yes. Prefer tracks Gemini on every plan, and Gemini is one of the three engines in Prefer’s free audit. Prefer treats Gemini as its own engine, separate from Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, so each Google surface gets its own Visibility, Share of Voice and citations. Gemini is on every plan, and in the free audit

Prefer tracks Gemini on every plan, from Starter up. Gemini is also one of the three engines in the free audit, so you can see how Google’s assistant talks about your brand before you sign up. Inside the app, Gemini has its own row. It is not merged with Google AI Overviews or Google AI Mode.

Gemini is the least repeatable engine we tested

In Prefer’s September 2026 study, two runs of the same Gemini question shared just 35% of their cited sites, and only 2 of 200 run pairs matched exactly. Perplexity, by contrast, matched exactly in 199 of 240 pairs. Gemini changes its sources a lot between asks. This is why Prefer measures every delta against the previous run, per engine. One Gemini run can swing on its own. Several runs in the same direction mean something.

Gemini reads widely, and it likes YouTube

Gemini drew on the widest source pool in our July study, and it was the only one of four chat engines to cite YouTube in September. In our July 2026 study it cited 367 distinct domains on 47 questions, against 89 for ChatGPT. In September every one of the 113 answers that cited YouTube came from Gemini, and Gemini cited Reddit in 93 answers too. A wide pool means more pages can win a Gemini citation. It also means a rival can appear from a source you never thought to check.

How to work with Gemini in Prefer

  1. Run the free audit. It gives you a first Gemini read with ChatGPT and AI Overviews beside it.
  2. Filter to Gemini. On any Monitor page, the Filter Bar narrows every number to Gemini alone.
  3. Look at the trend, not the last run. Check the Visibility Trend chart over several runs before you act on a Gemini change.
  4. Check the source types. On a prompt’s detail page, Top Domains and Domain types show whether Gemini leans on video, forums or vendor pages for that question.
To see where Gemini puts you today, run the free AI visibility audit. For the full run-to-run picture across engines, see the AI answer study.

Frequently asked questions

No. Prefer tracks Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode as three separate engines. Gemini is Google’s AI assistant; AI Overviews and AI Mode appear in Google Search. Each gets its own row in the Overview heatmap.
Prefer shows what Gemini actually returned, and Gemini varies a lot from one ask to the next. In our September 2026 study, two runs of the same question shared only 35% of cited sites on Gemini, against 96% on Perplexity. Read Gemini as a trend across several runs, not one result.
Yes. Prefer’s free audit includes Gemini, along with ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, with no account and no card. Paid plans add Perplexity and Google AI Mode and keep tracking over time.
