The honest answer depends on one question#
For most small teams the best buy is Prefer, at $24 a month for five AI engines and 15 drafted articles a month, because it writes content as well as reporting. Before you compare prices, decide whether you are buying a number or buying the work. Every tool in this market reports. Very few do anything about what they report, and that split, not the sticker, is what should pick your plan.
If your team already has a writer with spare hours, buy the cheapest credible monitor and spend the saved budget on content. If you do not, a cheap monitor hands you a dashboard and a to-do list nobody has time for, which is the most common way a small team wastes its first AI-visibility budget. The full field, with what each tool does after the chart, is in our best AI visibility tools roundup.
What the cheap plans actually give you#
| Tool | Entry | What you get | What it rations |
|---|---|---|---|
| AthenaHQ | Free | 300 credits, 5 models | Credits, then $295 to act |
| AirOps | Free start | ChatGPT insights only | Multi-engine sits far higher |
| Prefer (ours) | $24 | 5 engines, 30 prompts, 15 articles/mo | Prompts, by tier |
| Otterly | $29 | 4 engines, 15 prompts | Claude, Gemini and AI Mode cost $9 to $439 extra |
| LLM Pulse | 49 EUR | 50 prompts, 5 models, weekly | Daily tracking is 79 EUR |
| Peec AI | $95 | 50 prompts, 3 models | Each extra model costs $30 a month |
| Profound | Free trial | 50 prompts, daily for 7 days | ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews; paid brand plans are an Enterprise quote |
Two things jump out of that table. The first is that engine coverage is the most commonly missold part of a cheap plan: the count on the homepage is rarely the count at the tier you can afford, which is worth checking against our verified pricing index before you buy. The second is that the two cheapest paid plans do different jobs: Prefer tracks and writes, Otterly tracks.
How to spend the first month on almost nothing#
You can get a real baseline before you pay anyone. A sensible sequence for a team with no budget and no spare hours:
- Run a free one-off check first. Prefer’s free AI visibility audit needs no card, and Ahrefs and Otterly both publish free checkers. That gives you a baseline number in minutes rather than a subscription.
- Write down 20 to 40 prompts by hand. Your category question, your brand question, two or three competitor comparisons, and the buying questions that actually decide deals. This list is the asset; the tool is just what runs it. See how many prompts you should track.
- Check whether AI crawlers can even reach you. A share of unexplained absence is just a blocked bot, and that costs nothing to find with the crawler access checker.
- Only then pick a plan, priced against the prompt count you wrote down rather than the marketing page.
Doing it in that order usually changes which plan you buy, because most teams discover their real prompt set is smaller than they feared and their crawler access is worse than they assumed.
What we would tell a small team to buy#
Prefer is our product. Weigh the recommendation accordingly. At $24 it includes all five engines with no add-on, 30 tracked prompts and 15 drafted articles a month, which is the part small teams cannot otherwise buy at this price. The drafting is the unusual bit: of the eleven tools in our pricing index, only three publish an article allowance at all. No other tool that both tracks AI engines and writes content lists a lower price: Frase starts at $49 a month, and PromptWatch’s first plan with an article allowance is $245 for five a month.
If you only want the reading and you have the hands to act on it, Otterly at $29 is the most polished cheap monitor, though check the add-on prices before you assume your engines are included. If you want to spend nothing at all, AthenaHQ’s free tier is the most usable no-cost start in the category.
There is no version of this where a $24 plan replaces a real content team. A drafted article is a first draft, and it still needs a person to check the claims and put your voice on it. What a cheap plan removes is the blank page and the tracking spreadsheet, not the editor. To see whether that maths works for you, put your own cost per article into the AI visibility cost calculator.
Whichever you pick, start with a free baseline: run a free AI visibility audit, no card required, and you will know within ten minutes whether you have a coverage problem, a crawler problem or a content problem. That answer should pick your plan, not the other way round.
