Digital PR is the practice of earning coverage, mentions and links for your brand on trusted third-party websites, such as news publications, industry blogs, review sites and roundup articles. Prefer shows which of those sources AI engines actually cite when buyers ask about your category, so you know where coverage will count. In AI search, digital PR matters because engines often recommend brands by quoting pages that are not yours.
How digital PR works#
Classic PR aims for coverage in print and broadcast. Digital PR aims for coverage online, where it can be found, linked and read by crawlers. Common tactics:
- Data stories. Publish original research, then pitch the findings to journalists who cover your field.
- Expert commentary. Answer reporter requests and offer quotes on news in your category.
- Reviews and roundups. Get included, accurately, in the “best tools for X” articles buyers read.
- Community presence. Take part honestly in forums and communities where buyers ask for advice.
Why it matters for AI search visibility#
When an AI engine grounds an answer, it reads a handful of sources and writes from them. For “best tool” and “which brand” questions, many of those sources are third-party pages. If you are named on them, you can be named in the answer, even when your own site is not cited.
Prefer’s own data shows how concentrated those sources can be. In our August 2026 study of 25 B2B software buyer queries, Reddit was ChatGPT’s most-cited source at 30.3% of source citations, followed by Wikipedia (13.8%), TechRadar (9.6%) and Forbes (7.3%). It was one run on one day, so treat it as directional. Our September study of 240 ChatGPT answers about AI search found a different mix, led by Google’s developer docs. The lesson: the sources that matter depend on the topic, so look before you pitch.
Digital PR vs link building#
Link building aims for links that lift rankings. Digital PR aims for coverage, and links are a side effect. The difference matters more in AI search, because an answer can name your brand without linking to it. A mention with no link, an unlinked brand mention, still tells the engine who belongs in the category.
Two lines not to cross. Google’s spam policies treat buying or selling links that pass ranking credit as link spam. Google’s guide to generative AI search also says that seeking inauthentic mentions “isn’t as helpful as it might seem”. Earned, accurate coverage is the durable version.
How to plan digital PR for AI search#
Start from the answers, not from a media list. A simple loop:
- Pick your buyer prompts. The questions people ask before they buy, such as “best X for Y” and “X vs Y”.
- Read the sources. Run the prompts on each engine and note which third-party pages each answer cites.
- Rank the targets. Sources cited across several prompts and engines are worth the most effort.
- Earn an accurate place. Pitch data, offer expert quotes, correct out-of-date facts, and ask real customers for reviews.
- Measure again. Check whether the answers start naming you, and on which engines.
Different engines lean on different sources. In the same August study, YouTube was the top source on Google’s AI and Reddit was second, while ChatGPT put Reddit first. A plan built for one engine can miss another.
What good digital PR looks like#
- Accurate. Coverage that states your category, use case and facts correctly. A wrong fact on a cited page can travel into AI answers.
- Relevant. Mentions on pages about your category beat mentions on general lists.
- Earned. Real coverage, real reviews and honest community posts. Fake reviews and paid placements break platform rules and erode trust.
- Durable. Pages that stay live and get updated keep working; a news spike that drops off the web does not.
Does it cause AI citations?#
No public study proves that coverage causes citations. What we can say is narrower: engines cite third-party pages often, and the brands named on those pages are the ones that show up. Our answer on whether backlinks matter for AI search covers the evidence in more detail.
Example#
A cybersecurity startup is absent when buyers ask Perplexity for “best SOC 2 compliance tools”. The answer cites two review sites and one trade publication. The startup publishes a short study on audit timelines, pitches it to that publication, and asks customers for honest reviews on the two sites. Then it checks weekly whether the answer starts naming it.

Questions
Asked plainly.
What is digital PR in simple terms?
It is earning coverage of your brand on other people's websites: news stories, expert quotes, reviews and roundups. Prefer shows which of those third-party sources ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features cite for your buyer prompts. That list tells you where coverage will matter most.
Does digital PR help you get cited by AI engines?
It can, because AI engines often recommend brands by quoting third-party pages. Prefer's August 2026 study found Reddit was ChatGPT's most-cited source for software buyer queries, followed by Wikipedia, TechRadar and Forbes. No public study proves coverage causes citations, so measure the result rather than assume it.
What is the difference between digital PR and link building?
Link building chases links for ranking; digital PR earns coverage, and links often follow. Prefer cares about the mention as much as the link, because AI answers can name a brand without linking to it. Google's spam policies forbid buying links that pass ranking credit, which is one more reason to earn coverage instead.
Does Prefer do digital PR for you?
Prefer runs off-page work, including PR pitches, on its Enterprise plan and on Prefer Managed, its done-for-you service. Every plan shows which sources AI engines cite for your prompts, so you can see where coverage would count. The work is done by people, authentic at scale, not automated.
