Brand authority is how far people, search engines and AI models trust your brand as a credible source on a topic. Prefer shows the AI side of it: how often ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode name you against named competitors, and which sources they cite when they do. It is earned, mostly from what others say about you: reviews, press coverage, expert citations, community discussion and links.

How brand authority works#

No search engine publishes a “brand authority score”. The idea comes from how they describe trust. Google says its systems look for signals of experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, which it calls E-E-A-T, and that “of these aspects, trust is most important”. Its guidance also asks whether it is clear who created the content and why.

AI engines add a second layer. When an answer is grounded in live search, the engine reads a handful of pages and writes from them. Your authority in that answer depends on two things: whether the model already knows your brand as a credible name, and whether the pages it retrieves vouch for you.

Why it matters for AI search visibility#

Authority is not what you say about yourself. It is what the sources an AI engine reads say about you. Most of those sources are not your website. In Prefer’s September 2026 study of 80 questions about AI search, Reddit was cited in 98 of Perplexity’s 240 answers and 93 of Gemini’s, but only 16 of ChatGPT’s (see the study). Different engines lean on different third parties, so authority has to be built where each engine actually looks.

Review sites are part of this too. In Prefer’s July 2026 four-engine study, review sites like G2 were about 3% of all citations, useful on “best” and “alternatives” questions but not the whole story (details).

Example#

Two project management tools have similar features. One has a strong homepage and little else. The other is reviewed on comparison sites, quoted in trade press, and discussed honestly in community threads. Ask an AI engine “what is the best project tool for small agencies?” and the second is far more likely to be named, because the pages the engine retrieves keep mentioning it.

Common confusions#

  • Brand authority vs domain authority. Domain authority is a third-party SEO metric built mainly from backlinks. Brand authority is broader trust in the brand itself, including mentions with no link at all (unlinked brand mentions).
  • Brand authority vs topical authority. Topical authority is depth of coverage on one subject on your own site. Brand authority is how trusted the brand is, on and off your site.
  • Brand authority vs brand awareness. Awareness is how many people know your name. Authority is whether they, and the engines, believe you on a topic.

How to build it#

How Prefer helps#

Prefer tracks how often five AI engines name you against your competitors, shows the sources behind each answer, and writes AI articles on every self-serve plan. On Enterprise and Prefer Managed, it also does the off-page work: digital PR, Reddit participation and third-party mentions. Questions

Asked plainly.

What is brand authority in simple terms?

It is how much people and machines trust your brand as a credible voice on a topic. Prefer measures the AI side of it: how often ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode name you against competitors, and which sources they cite. Strong authority shows up as being named, recommended and quoted without having to pay for it.

How do you build brand authority for AI search?

Start by finding the third-party sources AI engines already cite in your category; Prefer lists them for your tracked prompts. Then publish original, expert content on your own site, keep your facts consistent everywhere, and earn mentions, reviews and coverage on the sites those engines read. Prefer writes AI articles on every self-serve plan, and does off-page work on Enterprise and Prefer Managed.

Is brand authority the same as domain authority?

No, and Prefer tracks something closer to what buyers see: whether AI engines name and cite your brand. Domain authority is a third-party SEO score based mostly on backlinks, not a Google metric. Brand authority is the wider idea of how trusted your brand is, which links feed into but do not define.

Can a small brand have more authority than a big one in AI answers?

Yes, on a narrow topic. Prefer's share of voice data shows this per prompt and per engine, so you can see where a smaller brand is already winning. AI engines answer specific questions, and a focused brand that is the clear expert, with corroboration from trusted sources, can be the one named over a bigger generalist.
