Entity SEO be a thing, not a string.
Entity SEO is optimizing so search engines and AI systems recognize your brand as a distinct thing with known facts. How it works and how Prefer checks it.

Entity SEO is the practice of making search engines and AI systems recognize your brand as a distinct real-world thing, with a stable name, category and set of facts, rather than as a string of words on a page. Prefer shows whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode name your brand and describe it correctly, which is the visible result of entity work.
Where the idea comes from#
Google framed the shift in 2012 when it introduced the Knowledge Graph as a way to understand “things, not strings”: real-world entities and the relationships between them, not just matching words. An entity is a person, company, product, place or concept the system can identify and attach facts to. Entity SEO is the work of becoming one of those things, with the right facts attached. The underlying idea is covered on our knowledge graph entity page.
How it works#
Search and AI systems decide what a brand is by reading many sources and checking whether they agree. Three inputs carry most of the weight:
- Consistent facts. Your name, category, founding details, product names and location stated the same way on your site, your profiles and third-party pages.
- Structured data. Google says Organization markup helps it “better understand your organization’s administrative details and disambiguate your organization in search results,” and the
sameAsproperty links your site to your official profiles elsewhere (Google Search Central). - Corroboration. Independent sources that repeat the same facts. One page saying something is a claim; many agreeing sources make it a fact the system will use.
Why it matters for AI search#
AI answers are built from what the system understands about a topic and the sources it retrieves. If a model cannot tell your brand apart from a similarly named company, it may skip you, merge you with someone else, or fill the gaps with guesses. Clear entities also help retrieval: when an engine runs several searches for one question (Google calls this query fan-out), pages that consistently tie your brand to its category are easier to match to the right sub-questions.
Entity SEO does not replace keyword SEO. Google’s own guidance is that existing SEO fundamentals still apply to its AI features. Entity work sits on top: it makes sure that once a page is found, the brand on it is understood.
Example#
Say your company is called “Atlas” and sells scheduling software. There are dozens of companies called Atlas. If your homepage says “scheduling software,” your LinkedIn says “workforce platform,” and a review site lists you under HR tools, a model has three weak, conflicting signals. Fix it by choosing one category line, using it everywhere, adding Organization schema with sameAs links to those same profiles, and earning a few independent write-ups that use the same description. Then ask the engines again and compare the answers.
Common confusions#
- Entity SEO is not schema alone. Markup that contradicts your visible content or third-party sources does not settle anything.
- An entity is not a keyword. You can rank for “scheduling software” without the system knowing which Atlas you are.
- A knowledge panel is a symptom, not the goal. It is one visible sign that Google has resolved your entity; AI engines can still describe you wrongly without one.
How Prefer helps#
Prefer tracks how five AI engines describe your brand across your buyer prompts and shows the sources behind each answer, so you can see where your facts are wrong, missing or borrowed from someone else. The free schema generator builds Organization markup, and our answer on why ChatGPT doesn’t know your company covers the most common entity gaps. Questions
Asked plainly.
What is entity SEO in simple terms?
It is making sure search engines and AI systems know your brand is a specific thing, with a name, a category and facts that stay the same everywhere. Prefer shows whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode name your brand and which sources they lean on when they describe you.
How is entity SEO different from keyword SEO?
Keyword SEO targets the words people type. Prefer tracks the other half: whether AI engines actually understand and recommend your brand when buyers ask, which depends on the system recognizing you as an entity. Entity SEO works on consistent facts, structured data and third-party corroboration rather than on repeating a phrase.
Does entity SEO help in ChatGPT and other AI engines?
It helps them describe you accurately, which is the precondition for being recommended. Prefer shows how each engine describes your brand and which pages it cites, so you can see where facts are wrong or missing. When a model can resolve who you are, it is less likely to confuse you with a similarly named company or invent details.
What is the fastest entity SEO fix?
Make your name, category and key facts identical everywhere, then add Organization structured data with sameAs links to your official profiles. Prefer's free schema generator builds that markup, and Prefer's free audit shows how AI engines describe you today, so you can check the fix against real answers.
