A knowledge panel is the information box Google shows when you search for a person, place, organization or thing that is in its Knowledge Graph. It gives a quick snapshot (name, description, logo, key facts, official profiles) built from sources across the web. Prefer shows how AI engines describe that same brand in their answers, which is where the entity clarity behind a panel pays off in AI search.

How a knowledge panel works#

Google introduced the Knowledge Graph in 2012 to understand “things, not strings”, meaning real entities and the links between them rather than just keywords (Google, Introducing the Knowledge Graph). A knowledge panel is the visible face of that graph.

According to Google, knowledge panels are generated automatically, and their information comes from various sources across the web, sometimes combined with data partners on specific topics (Google, About knowledge panels). Panels update as information on the web changes. Google also takes changes from verified representatives of the entity and from general user feedback.

You cannot buy or request a panel. You can make it more likely by being a well-formed knowledge graph entity.

What a knowledge panel usually shows#

The fields vary by entity type. For an organization, a panel often includes:

  • Name and a short description, often drawn from a reference source.
  • Logo and images, which Google says can come from a claimed panel or from Google Images results.
  • Key facts such as founders, founding date and headquarters.
  • Official profiles, the social and web accounts tied to the entity.

Each of those fields is a fact that also appears, or should appear, on your own site and on third-party pages. When those sources disagree, both the panel and AI answers can pick the wrong version.

Where AI search differs#

A knowledge panel is one fixed box per entity. AI answers are written fresh for each prompt, can compare you with competitors, and can cite different sources each time. So a correct panel does not mean AI engines describe you correctly in a buying question like “which tool is best for X”. You still need to check the answers themselves, prompt by prompt, and see which sources they lean on.

Why it matters for AI search visibility#

A knowledge panel is not an AI citation, and no engine documents that having one gets you cited. Treat it as a readout, not a lever. What it tells you is useful: Google has resolved your brand as one clear entity with stable facts.

That same clarity is what AI answers need. When an engine answers from memory, it can only be right about you if your facts were consistent wherever it learned them. When it grounds an answer in retrieved pages, consistent facts across your site and third-party profiles mean whichever page it pulls says the same thing. Brands that AI engines do not recognize often have the same root problem a missing panel points to; see why ChatGPT may not know your company.

A concrete example#

Search for a large software company and you will usually see a panel with its logo, a short description, its founding date, headquarters and links to official profiles. Search for a small startup with an ambiguous name and you may see nothing, or a panel for a different entity with the same name. That second case is a warning sign: if Google cannot tell you apart, an AI engine may mix you up too.

How to claim and correct a knowledge panel#

If you are the entity or its official representative, Google lets you claim the panel: search for it, choose “Claim this knowledge panel”, and sign in to one of the listed official sites or profiles, such as Search Console or YouTube (Google, Get verified on Google). Once verified, you can suggest changes. Not every panel is claimable yet; anyone can still use the Feedback link to suggest edits for review.

Common confusions#

  • Knowledge panel vs Business Profile. Google says Business Profiles look similar but are for businesses that serve customers at a location or in a service area, and are managed separately.
  • Knowledge panel vs Knowledge Graph. The graph is Google’s database of entities; the panel is one way it shows an entry.
  • Schema vs panel. Organization markup can influence which logo Google shows in your panel (Google Search Central, Organization structured data), but markup alone does not create one. See schema markup.

How to earn the entity signals behind a panel#

  1. Use the same name, category and one-line description on your site, profiles and directory listings.
  2. Add Organization schema on your home page with sameAs links to official profiles.
  3. Earn independent coverage that states the same facts.
  4. Correct wrong facts at the source, then on the panel once you can claim it.

How Prefer helps#

Prefer tracks how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode answer your buyer prompts, shows the sources behind each answer, and measures your share of voice against named competitors. Its free schema generator builds Organization markup. Run a free AI visibility audit to see how engines describe your brand today.

Questions

Asked plainly.

What is a knowledge panel in simple terms?

It is the box that appears on Google, usually beside the results on desktop, when you search for a well-known person, company, place or thing. Prefer shows the other side of the same question: how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers describe your brand. Google generates the panel automatically from sources across the web.

How do I get a knowledge panel for my company?

You cannot request one; Google creates panels for entities in its Knowledge Graph. Prefer's free AI visibility audit is a quick check of whether AI engines already recognize and name your brand. To become a clear entity, describe your name, category and facts the same way everywhere, add Organization schema with sameAs links, and earn independent coverage that repeats those facts.

Can I edit my knowledge panel?

Yes, indirectly. Prefer does not edit panels, but it shows how AI engines describe you so you can spot the same wrong facts elsewhere. On Google, an official representative can claim the panel by signing in to a linked official site or profile, then suggest changes; anyone else can use the Feedback link.

Does a knowledge panel help with AI search?

There is no published rule that a panel gets you cited, so treat it as a signal, not a lever. Prefer tracks whether AI engines name and cite your brand on your buyer prompts, which is the outcome that matters. A panel shows Google has resolved your brand as an entity, and the work that earns one (consistent facts, corroborating sources) is the same work that helps AI engines describe you correctly.
