Topical authority is the trust a website earns by covering one subject thoroughly and credibly, so search and AI engines treat it as a go-to source on that subject. Prefer helps you build it by writing content across the questions your buyers ask, on every self-serve plan, and by tracking whether AI engines start citing you for those questions. It is an SEO idea, not an official metric, so it is worth being precise about what is and is not known.

How topical authority works#

The idea is simple. A site that answers every important question in one field, with depth and first-hand knowledge, is a better bet than a site that touches the field once among a hundred other topics. That depth shows up in the content itself, the links between pages, and what other sites say about you.

In practice, topical authority is built from:

  • Coverage. Pages for the core questions in your field, not just the high-volume ones.
  • Depth. Real answers with specifics, examples and first-hand experience.
  • Structure. Related pages linked together so the subject reads as one body of work.
  • Corroboration. Other trusted sites mentioning and citing you on the same subject.

What Google actually says#

Google does not publish a “topical authority score”. It has described a topic authority system for news that “looks at a variety of signals to understand the degree of expertise a publication has in particular areas”, including how often other publishers cite its original reporting.

For web content in general, Google’s helpful content guidance asks “Does your site have a primary purpose or focus?” and flags “producing lots of content on many different topics in hopes that some of it might perform well” as a warning sign. It also asks whether content shows first-hand expertise, which ties topical authority closely to E-E-A-T.

AI engines often expand one question into several related searches before they answer, a process called query fan-out. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches across subtopics this way. A site that covers the whole topic has more pages that can match those searches, so it has more chances to be retrieved and cited.

Depth on one subject also helps engines connect your brand to a category. That is the same goal as being a clear knowledge graph entity: engines should know what you are and what you are an authority on. Our answer on why ChatGPT recommends some brands covers the other signals involved.

Example#

A payroll software company has a blog full of general business tips: hiring, office design, team lunches. It ranks for little and AI engines rarely cite it. It switches focus to payroll alone: tax deadlines by state, contractor versus employee rules, how to fix a payroll error, year-end filing. Each page links to the related ones. Over time the site becomes a place engines retrieve for payroll questions, because it answers the whole set of them.

Common confusions#

  • Not domain authority. Third-party “authority” scores mostly count links to the whole site. Topical authority is about one subject.
  • Not volume. Publishing more pages does not help if they are thin or off-topic. Google’s guidance warns against exactly that.
  • Not instant. It builds as coverage, links and mentions add up.

How Prefer helps#

Prefer tracks how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode answer your buyer prompts, shows the sources behind each answer, and compares your share of voice with named competitors. It writes AI articles on every self-serve plan to fill the gaps. Check where you stand with the free AI Visibility Checker.

Questions

Asked plainly.

What is topical authority in simple terms?

It means being known as a reliable source on one subject because you cover it thoroughly and well. Prefer helps you build it by writing content across the questions your buyers ask, on every self-serve plan, and tracking whether AI engines start citing you for them. A site that covers ten related questions deeply usually beats one that covers a hundred unrelated ones thinly.

Is topical authority a Google ranking factor?

Not as a single published score, and Prefer does not claim to measure one. Google has described a topic authority system for news, which looks at signals like original reporting and local expertise. For web content generally, its helpful content guidance asks whether a site has a primary purpose or focus and warns against publishing on many unrelated topics.

How do you build topical authority?

Map the full set of questions your buyers ask about one subject and answer each one well. Prefer shows the prompts and sources AI engines use in your category and writes content for the gaps. Link the pages together, show first-hand experience, and earn mentions from other trusted sites on the same subject.

Does topical authority help with AI search?

It helps in two ways, and Prefer tracks the result on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. AI engines often break one question into several related searches, so a site that covers the whole topic has more chances to be retrieved. Consistent depth on one subject also makes your brand easier for engines to associate with that category.
