An unlinked brand mention is a page that names your brand in its text without linking to your website. Prefer tracks whether AI engines name you in their answers, and unlinked mentions on third-party pages are one of the things that can put you there. A review that says “we switched to Acme” with no link is an unlinked mention of Acme.

How unlinked mentions work#

In classic SEO, a link was the unit that mattered. Links pass users and crawlers from one page to another, and Google treats them as signals. Google also lets publishers mark links with nofollow, sponsored or ugc, and says in its guide to qualifying outbound links that links marked this way “will generally not be followed.” A plain mention has no link to follow at all.

AI answers work differently. A language model writes from text. When it learns from training data or reads a page it retrieved at answer time, the words on the page are what it sees. Your brand name sitting in a sentence next to your category is information, linked or not.

Why unlinked mentions matter for AI search visibility#

Many AI answers come from memory, not from a live search. In Prefer’s July 2026 AI Citation Study, ChatGPT skipped live web search on 29 of its 47 answers and replied from memory, citing no sources. For those answers, the only way to be named is to already be in what the model learned, which comes from how often and how consistently the web writes about you.

When an engine does search, it often cites third-party pages. The same study found 40% of citations went to independent listicles, ahead of the vendors’ own sites at 34%. If those listicles name your competitors and not you, a link from your own blog will not fix it. A mention on the page the engine reads will.

Mention vs citation#

These two get mixed up. An unlinked mention lives on a third-party web page. An AI citation is when an AI answer links a page as its source. They connect: a page that mentions you can be cited by an AI engine, and then your name appears in an answer that links to someone else’s page. The mention vs citation answer covers the AI side in more detail.

Example#

A buyer asks Perplexity for the best project tools for small agencies. Perplexity cites a roundup on an industry blog. The roundup names your product in its third paragraph with no link. Your brand shows up in the answer, the citation goes to the blog, and you got there through an unlinked mention.

How to earn and use unlinked mentions#

Keep the facts in each mention accurate and consistent: the same brand name, category and description everywhere. Ask for a link where it helps readers, but do not skip a good mention because it comes without one. See brand mention monitoring for tracking mentions over time.

How Prefer helps#

Prefer shows the sources behind each AI answer and your share of voice against named competitors on five engines, so you can see which third-party pages matter for your category. Check your AI visibility for free to see where you are named today.

Questions

Asked plainly.

What is an unlinked brand mention?

It is any page that names your brand in its text but does not link to your site, such as a review, a forum post or a news story. Prefer tracks the AI side of this, showing whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode name you in their answers. The unlinked mention is on someone else's page; the AI mention is what that page can lead to.

Do unlinked brand mentions matter for AI search?

Yes, because a language model reads your name in the text, not the link around it. Prefer shows the sources behind each AI answer, so you can see which third-party pages name you and which name only your competitors. A link adds a path for crawlers and readers, but the mention itself is what tells a model your brand belongs in the answer.

Should I ask sites to turn unlinked mentions into links?

It is worth a polite ask when the page is relevant and the link would help readers. Prefer helps you decide where to spend that effort by showing which third-party pages AI engines already cite for your prompts. A page an engine cites is a better target than a page with high traffic that no engine reads.

How do I find unlinked mentions of my brand?

Search the web for your brand name and exclude your own domain, or use a web mention monitoring tool, then check each page for a link. Prefer covers the AI answer side, on five engines. Off-page outreach to earn new mentions is part of Prefer's Enterprise plan and Prefer Managed, not the self-serve plans.
