The 9 Best ChatGPT SEO Tools in 2026, Compared

Prefer is the best ChatGPT SEO tool for tracking and improving how ChatGPT answers about your brand, from $24/mo. 9 tools, prices checked September 2026.

Pricing and features checked 19 September 2026 against each vendor's public site

The short answer

Three picks, for three situations.

What are the best ChatGPT SEO tools?

Prefer is the best ChatGPT SEO tool if you want ChatGPT and four other AI engines tracked with content work included, from $24/mo. Otterly.AI is a low-cost daily ChatGPT tracker at $29/mo, and Profound's free trial runs 50 prompts daily for 7 days on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Before you pay, run three free checks: that your robots.txt lets OAI-SearchBot in, Google Analytics 4 for the visits ChatGPT sends, and Bing Webmaster Tools for indexing.

DisclosurePrefer publishes this list and is on it. We did not open paid accounts with the other tools. Each entry comes from the vendor's pricing page, read in a browser on the date shown, its documentation, and 240 ChatGPT answers we collected on 13 September 2026. Every other entry says where it beats Prefer.

In short

The takeaways, up front.

  • ChatGPT searched the web in 216 of its 240 answers in our September 2026 run and cited 3.05 sources per answer, against 19.48 for Perplexity. A ChatGPT tool earns its price by showing which URLs fill those few slots.
  • Two ChatGPT runs of the same question shared, on average, 37% of the sites cited across both, so one check is a reading, not a rank.
  • Check that your robots.txt lets OAI-SearchBot in before you pay for tracking. OpenAI documents it as the crawler that decides whether you can appear in ChatGPT search.
  • Prefer (our product) is our pick for ChatGPT plus four other engines with content work, from $24/mo.
  • Google Analytics 4 and Bing Webmaster Tools are free and cover visits and indexing. What ChatGPT says about you still needs prompt tracking.

How we evaluated

Four criteria. Nothing else counted.

Prefer is the pick for tracking and improving how ChatGPT answers your buyers: ChatGPT plus four other engines, with content work included, from $24/mo. In Prefer's September 2026 run ChatGPT cited about three sources per answer, and they changed from run to run, so repeated tracking matters. Otterly.AI runs ChatGPT daily from $29/mo.

01
Cited URLs, not only mentions

ChatGPT cited about three sources per answer. Knowing you were named is half the picture. The cited URLs tell you which pages you need to be on, or which of your own pages ChatGPT is reading.

02
ChatGPT on the plan you can afford

Some entry plans track ChatGPT only, some make you choose three models, some sell engines as add-ons, and some meter checks. We list what the entry plan includes, from the vendor's own pricing page, with the date we read it.

03
Free checks before paid ones

If OAI-SearchBot is blocked, no tracker can help. Access, indexing and visits can be checked for free, so the free first-party tools are on this list too.

The scores

Every tool, the same five numbers.

Each dimension is scored 0 to 5 on the scale below and the overall is the plain average, so you can check every number against the facts on this page. Prefer is our product and is scored on the same scale.

Tool Engines at entryPrompt-level dataCitation sourcesAction layerPrice per prompt Overall
Prefer (our product) 4.05.05.05.05.0 4.8/5
Otterly.AI 3.05.05.01.04.0 3.6/5
Ahrefs Brand Radar 4.05.05.01.02.0 3.4/5
HubSpot AEO 2.05.05.02.03.0 3.4/5
Peec AI 2.05.05.01.04.0 3.4/5
Semrush AI Visibility 4.05.03.01.02.0 3.0/5

How each number is set

  • Engines at entry: AI engines included on the lowest plan a brand can buy (for Profound that is Enterprise, its only paid brand plan). 8 or more = 5, 5 to 7 = 4, 4 = 3, 3 = 2, 1 or 2 = 1.
  • Prompt-level data: you choose the prompts and get history per prompt = 5; a fixed or recommended prompt set = 3; topic or score-level only = 1.
  • Citation sources: shows the domains and URLs behind each answer (a yes in the side-by-side table) = 5; partial = 3; none = 1.
  • Action layer: drafts the content and re-measures the result (yes and yes in the table) = 5; drafts without verification = 4; briefs or recommendations only = 2; reporting only = 1.
  • Price per prompt: entry price divided by the prompts that tier includes, per month. Under $1.00 = 5, $1.00 to $1.99 = 4, $2.00 to $2.99 = 3, $3.00 or more = 2, no published brand price = 1. A free tier with a countable allowance = 5.

Scored 26 September 2026 from the facts on this page: each tool's entry, the prices-at-a-glance table, the tool-type descriptions above, and the verified pricing index at /reviews/ai-visibility-tool-pricing/ for the vendors it covers. This page has no side-by-side capability table, so the citation and action values come from what the page states about each tool: the prompt trackers run your prompts on a schedule and report mentions, citations and competitors, with acting on the findings left to you, and Prefer's drafting and per-change verification are on our published price list and in the pricing index. Profound is not scored because the only plan a brand can buy is a custom Enterprise quote whose prompt editing and price are not published, and the free trial runs a recommended prompt set you cannot edit; it stays in the ranked list on its documented strengths. Google Analytics 4 and Bing Webmaster Tools are not scored because they do not run prompts, so none of the five dimensions applies; they stay on the list as free checks. Ahrefs Brand Radar's entry price is the Lite plan for the whole Ahrefs suite, and its per-prompt figure is that price over the 5 tracked prompts Lite includes. Prefer's row uses the same rules as every other row.

Three kinds of tool

They are not all the same product.

Prompt trackers

Otterly.AI, Peec AI, Semrush AI Visibility, Ahrefs Brand Radar, HubSpot AEO

Run your prompts in ChatGPT and other engines on a schedule, daily for the first four, and report mentions, citations and competitors. Cheap to start. Acting on what they find is up to you.

Buy one if someone on your team will act on what it shows.

Platforms with content work

Prefer, Profound

Track the same answers and add work on top. Prefer includes AI articles on every self-serve plan; Profound's Enterprise plan comes with AI Marketer credits for its agents.

Buy one if you are judged on the answer changing, not on the report.

Free first-party tools

Google Analytics 4, Bing Webmaster Tools

Count the visits ChatGPT sends and check that search engines have indexed your pages. They measure visits and indexing; prompt tracking needs one of the tools above.

Set both up first. They are free.

The ranked list

Every tool worth shortlisting.

Prefer first (our product, disclosed); the rest by how often ChatGPT named them in 45 answers to 15 tool questions, ties alphabetical.

01

Prefer

tryprefer.com
ChatGPT plus four engines From $24/mo, free trial

Prefer is our product. Every plan runs your tracked prompts through ChatGPT and four other AI engines and includes AI articles each month so a gap in ChatGPT's answer turns into a draft. The Starter plan connects Search Console and Google Analytics. Plans start at $24/mo for 30 prompts, with a free trial.

Strengths
ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode on every plan, from $24/mo
AI articles included on every self-serve plan, so a missing answer becomes a draft to publish
Search Console and Google Analytics connect from the Starter plan
Limitations
Slack and real-time alerts start on Growth; Claude is tracked only on Enterprise
VerdictOur pick if you want ChatGPT measured beside the other engines and the content work in the same tool.
02

Otterly.AI

otterly.ai
Low-cost daily tracking From $29/mo, free trial

Otterly.AI's Lite plan tracks 15 prompts daily across four engines, ChatGPT included, with unlimited seats (pricing page read in a browser on 19 September 2026). Gemini, Google AI Mode and Claude are paid add-ons on every tier. Standard, at $189/mo, raises the limit to 100 prompts and adds API and MCP access (read 19 September 2026). There is a free trial.

Strengths
Daily tracking on every tier, with ChatGPT included at $29/mo
Microsoft Copilot is one of the four engines on every tier
Limitations
15 prompts on Lite is a small sample of your market
Gemini, AI Mode and Claude cost extra on every tier ($9 to $439/mo)
VerdictBest for low-cost daily ChatGPT readings. Where it beats Prefer: it tracks Copilot on every tier, where Prefer covers it on Enterprise. ChatGPT itself named Otterly.AI more than any other tool in our run (36 of 45 answers). Visit site →
03

Peec AI

peec.ai
Daily tracking, unlimited users From $95/mo

Peec AI's Starter plan is $95/mo for 50 prompts, three models of your choice, daily tracking, unlimited users and one project (pricing page read in a browser on 19 September 2026). Pro is $245/mo for 150 prompts and two projects. ChatGPT is one of the six models on the self-serve menu, with AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot, Naver AI and Gemini; Perplexity and Claude are not on it, and the full model list is on Enterprise.

Strengths
Daily tracking and unlimited users on every self-serve plan
You choose the three models you track, so ChatGPT can be one of them
Limitations
Three models per self-serve plan, so ChatGPT uses one of your three slots
Starter covers one project
VerdictBest for teams that want daily ChatGPT numbers with seats for everyone. Where it beats Prefer: unlimited users from the entry plan. Compare vs Prefer →
04

Profound

tryprofound.com
Free check, enterprise depth Free trial, then Enterprise (custom)

Profound's brand pricing page shows two options (read in a browser on 23 September 2026): a free Trial that runs 50 prompts daily for 7 days, on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, from a recommended prompt set you cannot edit, and a custom Enterprise plan with daily tracking, up to 9 answer engines, SSO/SAML and SOC 2 compliance. Profound also publishes ChatGPT research, including an analysis of about 730,000 ChatGPT.com conversations from late 2025.

Strengths
A free trial: 50 prompts, run daily for 7 days, on three engines
Enterprise lists daily tracking, up to 9 answer engines, SSO/SAML and SOC 2
Publishes its own research on how ChatGPT cites the web
Limitations
No published paid price for brands; Enterprise is a custom quote after a demo
The trial runs once, on ChatGPT only, with no history or exports
VerdictBest for a free first look at ChatGPT and for enterprise buyers. Where it beats Prefer: SSO/SAML and SOC 2 for procurement, and up to nine engines on Enterprise. Compare vs Prefer →
05

Semrush AI Visibility

semrush.com
Semrush users $99/mo per domain; Semrush One from $199/mo

Semrush sells AI visibility two ways. The standalone AI Visibility toolkit is $99/mo per domain for 25 prompts tracked daily across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini, by Semrush's own plan comparison (read in a browser on 19 September 2026). Semrush One bundles the SEO suite with AI visibility: Starter is $199/mo with 50 prompts tracked daily, Pro+ $299/mo with 100 and Advanced $549/mo with 200 (read 19 September 2026).

Strengths
Daily tracking of 25 prompts, ChatGPT included, for $99/mo
Semrush One Starter puts 50 daily prompts beside the SEO suite for $199/mo
Limitations
The $99 toolkit is priced per domain and tracks 25 prompts
More prompts mean moving to Semrush One, from $199/mo
VerdictBest for teams that already live in Semrush: the $99 toolkit to start, or Semrush One Starter if you also want the SEO suite. Where it beats Prefer: one vendor for SEO data and AI answers. Compare vs Prefer →
06

Ahrefs Brand Radar

ahrefs.com
Ahrefs users With paid Ahrefs plans from $129/mo

Brand Radar's prompt tracking is included in paid Ahrefs plans. Lite, $129/mo, includes 5 tracked AI prompts and 150 checks a month, which Ahrefs puts as '5 prompts on 1 platform = 150 checks/mo', so 5 ChatGPT prompts updated daily (read in a browser on 8 and 19 September 2026). Each extra platform uses the meter faster, and Claude uses 8 checks per update; cadence can be set per platform to daily, weekly or monthly. The AI Visibility Index is sold separately at $199/mo per platform, or $699/mo for all of them, and covers 455M+ monthly prompts, 31.3 million of them for ChatGPT (read 19 September 2026). A free look-up shows any domain's AI visibility, and Ahrefs publishes a monthly ranking of the sites ChatGPT cites most.

Strengths
Lite tracks 5 ChatGPT prompts daily inside the Ahrefs suite
A free AI visibility look-up for any domain
A monthly public ranking of the sites ChatGPT cites most
Limitations
150 checks a month on Lite covers 5 prompts daily on one platform; more platforms, or Claude at 8 checks per update, use it faster
The AI Visibility Index is a separate product, $199/mo per platform
VerdictBest for Ahrefs customers who want a few ChatGPT prompts tracked daily. Where it beats Prefer: Claude available on paid plans (Prefer adds Claude only on Enterprise), though Claude uses the meter eight times as fast. Visit site →
07

HubSpot AEO

hubspot.com
HubSpot users $50/mo, free trial

HubSpot AEO, labelled beta on its product page, is $50/mo, or $45/mo billed annually, for 25 prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity (read in a browser on 19 September 2026). The trial tracks the same 25 prompts for free with no credit card, then continues at $50/mo. You can buy more prompts at any time, and each extra brand is another $50/mo plan. It lists brand visibility and sentiment, competitor share of voice and citation analysis, and prioritized AEO recommendations, and it works wherever your website is hosted.

Strengths
ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for $50/mo ($45/mo billed annually)
Free trial of the same 25 prompts, no credit card
Extra prompts can be bought at any time
Limitations
Labelled beta on its product page
Three engines listed; Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are not shown on the page
One brand per plan, so each extra brand is another $50/mo
VerdictBest for teams that already run on HubSpot. Where it beats Prefer: you can add prompts at any time, where Prefer's prompt count is set by plan, and it comes from a vendor your team may already use. Visit site →

Google Analytics 4

analytics.google.com
Free: ChatGPT traffic Free

ChatGPT's own answers in our September runs cite OpenAI's publisher FAQ for a utm_source=chatgpt.com tag on ChatGPT's referral links (we could not open that FAQ ourselves), and all 731 links ChatGPT cited in our API run carried utm_source=openai. Filter sessions by source for both values and you can see which pages ChatGPT sends people to, and whether they convert. Google describes Analytics as free of charge.

Strengths
Free, and it shows what ChatGPT visitors do after they arrive, down to conversions
Works with the utm_source tags on ChatGPT's links
Limitations
Counts clicks only; an answer that names you without a click leaves no trace here
Shows traffic, not what ChatGPT said about you
VerdictBest for proving that ChatGPT sends visits that convert. Where it beats Prefer: it is free, and it measures the visits and conversions themselves; Prefer's Starter plan connects to it rather than replacing it. Set it up before you pay for any tracker. Visit site →
09

Bing Webmaster Tools

bing.com
Free: indexing and Copilot Free

Microsoft calls Bing Webmaster Tools 'free and full of powerful features'. Its AI Performance report (February 2026) shows citations, cited pages and grounding queries across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and 'select partner integrations', and a June 2026 update added Citation Share. SEO guides link Bing to ChatGPT: Marketer Milk's LLM SEO guide (October 2025) says 'Bing powers much of the AI-driven search in ChatGPT'. OpenAI's crawler documentation names OAI-SearchBot as the crawler for ChatGPT search, so treat Bing indexing as cheap insurance, not the main lever.

Strengths
Free first-party data on citations in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries
Sitemap submission and IndexNow to get new pages indexed faster
Limitations
Its AI report is built for Microsoft Copilot and Bing, so read it as a Copilot report, not a ChatGPT one
Bing's role in ChatGPT search comes from guides and other engines, not from OpenAI's crawler page
VerdictBest free check that search can find your pages. Where it beats Prefer: it is free, and it reports citations in Microsoft Copilot, which Prefer covers on Enterprise rather than on its self-serve plans. Visit site →

What changed in 2026

Four shifts that reshaped the category.

This list looked different a year ago. These are the changes that moved it.

01
Profound's free route became a trial

Between 14 and 16 September 2026, Profound's brand pricing changed to a free Trial (by 23 September: 50 prompts, run daily for 7 days, on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews) and a custom Enterprise plan. Today the only $99 and $399 prices on Profound's page are on the agencies view.

02
Microsoft started reporting AI citations

In February 2026 Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report: citations, cited pages and grounding queries for Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, at no cost.

03
Bing added a citation share figure

In June 2026 Bing added Citation Share: the percentage of all citations for a grounding query that point to your site. It is a free, first-party share figure for Microsoft's AI answers.

04
Google added AI reports to Search Console

In June 2026 Google introduced generative AI performance reports in Search Console for its own AI features. For ChatGPT, measuring the answers still means running prompts.

Red flags

Things to check before you sign.

Every tool here demos well. These are the questions that separate them once the trial ends.

One ChatGPT run sold as a rank

ChatGPT's sources changed a lot between runs of the same question in our data. A single check reported as your 'ChatGPT ranking' is one draw. Ask how many times each prompt runs and how the tool shows the spread.

Mentions with no cited URLs

If a tool says you were mentioned but cannot show the pages ChatGPT cited, you cannot tell which page to win or fix. Ask to open one full answer with its links before you buy.

No word on app or API

A tool can record answers from the ChatGPT app or from OpenAI's API. Both are valid, but they are different surfaces. Ask which one the tool uses and keep it fixed over time.

Prompts you cannot edit

Preset prompt sets are a fine start. If you cannot add the questions your buyers actually ask, the tool measures a market that is not quite yours.

ChatGPT hidden inside one blended score

ChatGPT cites far fewer sources per answer than Perplexity, and its sources shift more between runs. A single score across engines hides where you are winning and where you are absent.

A ChatGPT SEO tool tracks how ChatGPT answers the questions your buyers ask, shows which pages it cites, and helps you change what it says. This list is for that job, on ChatGPT specifically. Prefer ranks first: it tracks ChatGPT beside four other engines and includes the content work. For every AI engine at once, see the best AI visibility tools. For mention, citation and share-of-voice monitoring, see the best AI search monitoring tools.

Here is what we did. We read each vendor’s pricing page in a browser on the dates shown, read their documentation, and asked ChatGPT 80 questions about AI search three times each: 240 answers on 13 September 2026, through the DataForSEO API with web search on. We did not open paid accounts with the other tools. Prefer is our product, and it is on this list.

Two things people mean by “ChatGPT SEO tools”#

The phrase covers two different jobs. On 19 September 2026, Google’s first page for “chatgpt seo tools” split between them. A Reddit thread, Serpstat’s ChatGPT plugin, an Apiary Digital guide and an Ahrefs list of custom GPTs and ChatGPT integrations are about using ChatGPT to do SEO work. Lists from Respona, Percepture and Frizerly are about getting your brand into ChatGPT’s answers.

This page covers the second job. If you meant the first, ChatGPT is the tool, and Ahrefs’ ChatGPT SEO tools article collects custom GPTs for it. Check any number ChatGPT gives you against real data.

What ChatGPT does differently, measured#

ChatGPT searched the web in 216 of its 240 answers (90%) and cited 3.05 sources per answer. On the same 80 questions, Claude cited 4.58, Gemini 8.64 and Perplexity 19.48. A ChatGPT answer has room for about three sources, so the useful question is which three, and whether one of them can be yours.

Bar chart of average sources cited per answer in the September 2026 AI answer study, 240 answers per engine: ChatGPT 3.05 (highlighted), Claude 4.58, Gemini 8.64, Perplexity 19.48. Share of answers that searched the web: ChatGPT 90% (216 of 240), Claude 80% (192 of 240), Gemini 89% (213 of 240), Perplexity 100% (240 of 240).
ChatGPT cited about three sources per answer, against 19.48 for Perplexity on the same 80 questions. Prefer AI answer study, 13 September 2026 (API).

ChatGPT’s sources changed between runs. When ChatGPT answered the same question more than once, two runs shared, on average, 37% of the sites cited across both. Perplexity’s figure was 96%, Claude’s 68% and Gemini’s 35%. One check shows you one draw. A tool worth paying for runs your prompts again and again and shows you the spread (do AI answers change when asked twice?).

Four pairs of overlapping circles, one per engine, where the filled overlap shows the average share of sites two runs of the same question both cited: ChatGPT 37% (206 run pairs), Gemini 35% (200), Claude 68% (179), Perplexity 96% (240).
Two ChatGPT runs of the same question shared, on average, 37% of the sites cited across both. Prefer AI answer study, 13 September 2026 (API).

ChatGPT often goes straight to a brand’s own site. In 99 of its 240 answers, at least one of ChatGPT’s searches used the site: operator to search a single website. On tool questions it searched site:peec.ai in 22 answers and site:otterly.ai in 21. Asked “How much does Peec AI cost?”, all three ChatGPT answers cited one page: peec.ai/pricing. If ChatGPT does the same with your brand, your own pricing and product pages are what it reads, so keep them crawlable, current and plainly worded.

Reddit showed up when buyers asked which tool to pick. ChatGPT cited Reddit in 16 of its 240 answers, and 15 of those came from the 23 questions about choosing, pricing or comparing tools: 15 of 69 answers there, against 1 of the other 171. It cited LinkedIn and YouTube in none. Our August study, which read a database of pooled ChatGPT answers to 25 “best software” queries, ranked Reddit first on all 25. So if buyers ask ChatGPT which product to choose in your category, watch the Reddit threads it cites; on how-to questions, Reddit rarely appeared. The full breakdown is in which sources ChatGPT cites.

These numbers come from one topic (AI search), one day, and the API rather than the ChatGPT app. Treat them as a measured reading, not a law. The dataset is public on the AI answer study page.

The four checks behind ChatGPT visibility#

Each check has a tool, and three of the four can be done for free.

Diagram of four checks for ChatGPT visibility, each with an illustrative screen and a tool. 1, free: can ChatGPT reach your pages? OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt; tool: Prefer's crawler access checker or server logs; all 24 of 24 answers across four engines to two questions on ranking in ChatGPT named OAI-SearchBot. 2, free: can search engines find your pages? Indexing, Bing included; tool: Bing Webmaster Tools; Perplexity, Gemini and Claude named Bing in 16 of 18 answers, ChatGPT in 0 of 6. 3, paid: what does ChatGPT say and cite? Your prompts run repeatedly, three runs at least; tools: Prefer (ours), Otterly.AI, Peec AI, Profound, Semrush, Ahrefs, HubSpot AEO; two ChatGPT runs shared, on average, 37% of the sites cited across both. 4, free: does ChatGPT send visits? A utm_source tag on ChatGPT's links; tool: Google Analytics 4; all 731 links ChatGPT cited through the API carried utm_source=openai.
Three of the four checks are free; only tracking the answers needs a paid tool.

1. Can ChatGPT reach your pages?#

OpenAI’s crawler documentation says “Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.” GPTBot is for model training, and OpenAI says each setting is independent, so blocking GPTBot does not take you out of ChatGPT search. Read your robots.txt, or paste it into our free crawler access checker, which reports OAI-SearchBot separately. When we asked the four engines how to rank in ChatGPT search or get cited by ChatGPT, all 24 answers named OAI-SearchBot. Google’s AI Overview for “chatgpt seo tools” on 19 September told readers to keep GPTBot and ChatGPT-User open, which is not the crawler OpenAI names for search. Server logs show whether OAI-SearchBot actually visits (is ChatGPT blocked from my site?).

2. Can search engines find your pages?#

On those same two questions, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude named Bing in 16 of their 18 answers. ChatGPT named Bing in none of its 6, and OpenAI’s crawler page is about its own bots. Being indexed on Bing costs nothing, so check it in Bing Webmaster Tools, and treat it as insurance, not the main lever.

3. What does ChatGPT say, and which pages does it cite?#

This is the paid part. A tracker runs your prompts in ChatGPT on a schedule and records mentions, cited URLs and competitors. Ask whether it records the ChatGPT app or the API. Both are valid, but they are different surfaces, and our numbers on this page come from the API. Done when the same prompt set has run at least three times and a new run adds no site to your top 10 cited domains. Three runs is a floor, not a proven minimum.

4. Does ChatGPT send you visits?#

ChatGPT’s own answers point to a UTM tag. In our September AEO loop runs, ChatGPT cited OpenAI’s publisher FAQ for it; on 2 September one answer said: “OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral URLs automatically include the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com, which makes this traffic identifiable in analytics tools.” We could not open that FAQ ourselves, so treat the value as ChatGPT’s report of OpenAI’s page. Filter Google Analytics 4 sessions by source to see those visits (the ChatGPT UTM parameter).

Which tools ChatGPT itself recommends#

Fifteen of our questions ask which AI visibility, AEO or GEO tool to use without naming a vendor, and ChatGPT answered each three times. Across those 45 answers it named Otterly.AI in 36, Profound and Peec AI in 35 each, Semrush in 33, Scrunch in 30 and Ahrefs Brand Radar in 29.

Bar chart of ChatGPT answers naming each tool, of 45 answers to 15 vendor-neutral tool questions. Named in more than half: Otterly.AI 36, Profound 35, Peec AI 35, Semrush 33, Scrunch 30, Ahrefs Brand Radar 29. Named in fewer than half: Google Search Console 16, HubSpot AEO 15, Surfer 15, Writesonic 12, SE Ranking 10, Frase 10, Google Analytics 9, Bing Webmaster Tools 5.
The tools ChatGPT names when asked which to use. A count of ChatGPT's answers, not a quality score; Prefer is not counted. Prefer AI answer study, 13 September 2026 (API).

We used this count to order the list after Prefer, with ties in alphabetical order. It is a rule anyone can reproduce from the public data, not a quality score. Prefer comes first because it is our pick and our product, and we say so.

Treat the prices in ChatGPT’s answers with care. On questions about Profound and Peec AI, 8 ChatGPT answers quoted Profound brand plans at $99 or $399. Those plans were on Profound’s pricing page that day. Three days later, they were gone from it.

HubSpot AEO, named in 15 answers, is on our list as a tracker. We leave out several other names ChatGPT used more often than our two free tools. Scrunch (30 answers) starts at $250/mo for 125 prompts across 4 LLMs (read 19 September 2026), and we cover it on the best AI visibility tools list. Surfer (15), Writesonic (12) and Frase (10) are content tools, covered on the best AI SEO tools list. SE Ranking (10) is out because its pricing page did not load in our browser, so we could not check a price. Google Search Console (16) reports Google’s own AI features, not ChatGPT’s. We include Google Analytics 4 (named in 9 answers) and Bing Webmaster Tools (5) as free checks, whatever their count.

Where Prefer is not the right pick#

If you need Microsoft Copilot tracked on a self-serve budget, look beyond Prefer’s self-serve plans, which cover ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode; Prefer Enterprise tracks Copilot. Otterly.AI includes Copilot on every tier, and Bing Webmaster Tools reports Copilot citations for free.

If you need Claude on a self-serve plan, Prefer adds Claude on Enterprise, with every other model you need. Ahrefs Brand Radar lets you track Claude on paid Ahrefs plans, at 8 checks per update, so the Lite plan’s 150 checks a month cover little of it.

If procurement needs a long vendor record and a security file, know that Prefer was founded in 2025. Profound’s Enterprise plan lists SSO/SAML and SOC 2 on its pricing page.

If you want Slack alerts on the entry plan, they start on Prefer’s Growth plan, at $129/mo.

How we built this list#

Prices come from each vendor’s pricing page, read in a rendered browser on the date in the table and recorded in dated research notes. Prefer’s come from our published facts.

The ChatGPT data comes from our September 2026 AI answer study: 80 questions about AI search, each asked three times on 13 September 2026 through the DataForSEO API (ChatGPT’s gpt-5.6-luna model, web search on). That gave 240 ChatGPT answers and 731 citations, compared with the same questions on Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. It is the API, not the ChatGPT app, and one topic on one day.

What we did not do: we did not buy or trial the other tools, so nothing here describes using them ourselves. We will re-run the study in October 2026 and update this page.

Before you buy a tracker, see where you stand. Run Prefer’s free AI visibility audit, compare plans and pricing, or read how to appear in ChatGPT search for the work that changes the answer.

The questions buyers ask next.

Not in one official report; Prefer runs a fixed prompt set through ChatGPT and shows where you appear. Asked how to check a brand's visibility, one ChatGPT answer in our run said there is no single ChatGPT ranking equivalent to a Google position, and another said: 'At present, the practical way to assess ChatGPT visibility is to run a fixed prompt set regularly or use an AI-search monitoring platform.'

How to measure AI visibility →

Possibly, but check the claims. Prefer's free crawler access checker covers the part you control: whether OAI-SearchBot can reach your pages. OpenAI's crawler page is about its own bots, and some answers get specific without a source: all three of Claude's answers to 'How do I rank in ChatGPT search?' said '87% of ChatGPT retrieval-mode citations overlap with Bing's top results', a figure we could not trace. Being indexed on Bing is free insurance; fix OAI-SearchBot access first.

Check if ChatGPT is blocked →

Filter Google Analytics 4 sessions by source. Prefer's Starter plan connects to Google Analytics 4 rather than replacing it. In our API run, all 731 links ChatGPT cited carried utm_source=openai, while ChatGPT's own answers report utm_source=chatgpt.com on referral links, so filter for both. Treat the count as a floor: an answer that names you without a click leaves no trace.

The ChatGPT UTM parameter →

About three. In Prefer's 13 September 2026 run, the typical ChatGPT answer cited 3 sources (the median), the most was 11, and 27 of 240 answers cited none. An earlier run of 50 prompts, on 2 September 2026, found 3.8 per answer that searched the web.

How many sources ChatGPT cites →

That is the other meaning of 'ChatGPT SEO tools', and this page does not cover it. Prefer is the other kind: it tracks how ChatGPT answers your buyers and drafts content aimed at changing those answers. Some SEO tools plug their data into ChatGPT: Serpstat's ChatGPT plugin, for example, says it returns keyword volume, difficulty and PPC competition inside the chat (its search listing on 19 September 2026). Check any number ChatGPT gives you against a real data source.

Questions

Asked plainly.

What is the best ChatGPT SEO tool in 2026?

Prefer is our pick for tracking and improving how ChatGPT answers about your brand: ChatGPT and four other AI engines tracked with content work included, from $24/mo. It is our own product, so weigh that. Otterly.AI is a low-cost daily ChatGPT tracker at $29/mo, Peec AI adds unlimited users from $95/mo, and Profound's free trial runs 50 prompts daily for 7 days on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Semrush and Ahrefs suit teams already on those suites.

Is there a free ChatGPT SEO tool?

Yes, for parts of the job. Prefer has a free audit and a free trial (30 prompts, 7 days, no card). Reading your robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot costs nothing. Google Analytics 4 counts the visits ChatGPT sends, and Bing Webmaster Tools checks indexing and Copilot citations; both are free. Profound's free trial runs 50 prompts daily for 7 days on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews only, HubSpot AEO's trial tracks 25 prompts with no credit card, and Ahrefs has a free AI visibility look-up for any domain. These are one-off looks, trials or first-party data; plan on a paid tracker for repeated runs of your own prompts.

How much do ChatGPT SEO tools cost?

Prefer starts at $24/mo (30 prompts, five engines), the lowest paid price on this list. As checked in September 2026: Otterly.AI from $29/mo (15 prompts, four engines), Peec AI from $95/mo (50 prompts, three models), Semrush's AI Visibility toolkit $99/mo per domain (25 prompts) or Semrush One from $199/mo (50 prompts), and Ahrefs Brand Radar with paid Ahrefs plans from $129/mo (5 tracked prompts, 150 checks a month). HubSpot AEO is $50/mo (25 prompts, three engines). Profound shows brands a free trial and a custom Enterprise quote. Google Analytics 4 and Bing Webmaster Tools are free.

Which crawler does ChatGPT need to reach my site?

OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's documentation names it as the crawler for ChatGPT search, and Prefer's free crawler access checker reports it separately. Sites that block it can still show up as navigational links, and OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to register. GPTBot is a separate crawler for model training.

Do I need a tool only for ChatGPT?

Usually not, but make sure ChatGPT is on the plan you buy. Prefer tracks ChatGPT beside Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode on every plan, and most trackers here include ChatGPT with other engines. Profound's free trial covers ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and Peec AI makes you choose three models. ChatGPT behaves differently from the other engines (fewer sources per answer, and sources that change more between runs than Perplexity's), so read its results on their own rather than blended into one score.

How to choose

Answer a few questions and the shortlist writes itself.

01
Can OAI-SearchBot reach your site?

Check your robots.txt first; Prefer's free crawler access checker reports OAI-SearchBot separately. If it is blocked, fix that before you buy anything, because no tracker can make ChatGPT cite a page it is not allowed to fetch.

02
Are you already paying for Semrush, Ahrefs or HubSpot?

Start with the AI visibility layer of the suite you have: Semrush's $99 toolkit or Semrush One Starter ($199/mo, 50 prompts), Brand Radar on your paid Ahrefs plan, or HubSpot AEO ($50/mo, 25 prompts). Move to a dedicated tool such as Prefer when you outgrow the prompt limits.

03
Do you need a security review before you buy?

Profound's Enterprise plan lists SSO/SAML and SOC 2 on its pricing page, which is where it beats Prefer. If procurement drives the decision, start there.
