Yes. Prefer measures Share of Voice as your brand mentions divided by all brand mentions across the AI answers in scope. You can read it blended or per engine, per prompt and per run, and compare it against every tracked competitor on ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Perplexity. Last updated 3 October 2026 Yes. Share of Voice is one of the core metrics in Prefer, and it sits in the KPI strip at the top of the Overview dashboard. Prefer counts every brand named in every stored answer, so the number reflects what the engines actually said rather than an estimate.

How Prefer calculates it

Share of Voice in Prefer is your brand mentions divided by all brand mentions across the answers in scope. If 40 answers name 200 brands in total and you are named 20 times, your Share of Voice is 10%. The Prefer metrics docs define it in exactly those terms. Two details make the number trustworthy:
  • It uses stored answers. For each prompt and engine, Prefer keeps the full answer and the list of brands in order of appearance. Share of Voice is counted from that list.
  • It follows your scope. The Filter Bar sets the date range, engines, topic, persona, region and tag. Change any of them and Share of Voice recomputes for that narrower set.
Like every Prefer metric, it shows a delta vs the previous run, never vs yesterday.

Where you see it in the app

Prefer shows Share of Voice at 4 levels: account, engine, prompt and competitor. The Prompts list also carries a Share of Voice column, so you can sort every tracked question by how much of the answer you own.

How to raise a low number

A low Share of Voice usually means rivals are named in answers where you are missing. Prefer’s Competitors console turns that into a work list:
  1. Open the Opportunities tab: it lists prompts where a rival is named and you are not, with the engine.
  2. Pick one engine in the Filter Bar, since blended numbers can hide a large gap on a single model.
  3. Read the full answers for the top 5 prompts and note the sources each engine cites.
  4. Create an Action in the Action Center for each source you can realistically earn a place in.
  5. Track those prompts for 3 or 4 runs and check that the rival’s lead on that engine shrinks.
Share of Voice moves when the sources engines trust start naming you, so the fix is usually off your own site. Track it per engine for a few runs before you judge a change. Frequently asked questions

Prefer’s Visibility Score asks whether you appear at all: the percentage of tracked answers that name you. Share of Voice asks how much of the conversation you hold: your mentions over all brand mentions. A crowded category can give you a high Visibility Score and a low Share of Voice at the same time.
No. Prefer’s Share of Voice counts brand mentions in the answer text. Links to your domain are measured separately as Citation Share, which is citations to your domain divided by all citations in scope.
Yes. Pick one engine in Prefer’s Filter Bar and Share of Voice recomputes for that engine’s answers alone. The Platform performance heatmap also shows it per engine side by side, which is the quickest way to spot an engine that rarely names you.
