What is the best tool to track AI citations and share of voice in AI search?
Prefer is the best tool to track AI citations and share of voice if you also want the work that wins them: sources and share of voice across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode on every plan from $24/mo. For daily tracking of every cited URL on a small budget, Otterly ($29/mo, four engines). For enterprise citation share with SOC 2 and all-time history, Profound (custom Enterprise). If you already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush, start with their AI layers.

DisclosurePrefer publishes this list and ranks itself first. We did not open trial accounts with the other seven tools. Each entry comes from the vendor's own docs (read 19 September 2026) and pricing page (rendered 18 and 19 September 2026), and each names where that tool beats Prefer. The study figures on this page leave out every result about Prefer's own site.
In short
The takeaways, up front.
This list covers one job: recording which pages AI engines cite for your buyers' questions and your share of those citations. For alerts when answers change, see our AI search monitoring list; for what AI says about your brand and whether it is true, see our AI brand monitoring list.
AI engines name one set of tools and cite another. Across 180 answers to 15 tool-buying questions (13 September 2026), Peec AI was named in 110 and its own site was cited in 2. A tracker has to store cited URLs, not just brand names.
One run is a sample: two runs of the same question shared, on average, 37% of the sites cited across both on ChatGPT, 35% on Gemini, 68% on Claude and 96% on Perplexity.
On this page's own question, 5 of the 128 citations went to pages in Google's top 20 for that question. Rank tracking will not tell you which pages AI cites.
Prefer (ours) tracks five engines on every plan from $24/mo and includes the work that wins citations.
How we evaluated
Four criteria. Nothing else counted.
Prefer tracks which pages ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode cite for your buyers' questions, and your share of voice against rivals, on every plan from $24/mo, with the work that wins citations included. Otterly ($29/mo) is a low-cost daily URL tracker, Profound suits enterprise, and Ahrefs and Semrush suit their users.
01
It records the page, not just the name
A mention and a citation are different events. On 15 tool-buying questions, AI engines named Otterly in 125 answers and cited otterly.ai in 14. A citation tracker has to store the cited URLs for every answer, or you cannot see which pages decide your category.
02
It runs each prompt more than once and keeps the history
Answers move between identical runs, most on ChatGPT and Gemini. A tracker should re-run on a schedule, store every run with its date, and show the trend with its spread, not one reading.
03
Share of voice against rivals you name, with the formula shown
Share of voice can count mentions, citations or answers. We looked for tools that let you pick your competitors, split the number by engine, and say what they count.
04
Engines and prompts at the tier you would buy
Engines are often add-ons or Enterprise-only. We compared each entry tier's engines and prompts, and every price on this page was read in a rendered browser on a stated date.
Built for AI answers first. They run your prompts across engines, store the answers and the cited sources, and compute share of voice. They differ on engines at entry, and how deep the source data goes: domains, pages, or source types.
Buy one if AI answers are a channel you report on.
SEO suites with an AI layer
Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush AI Visibility
Add cited pages or domains and share of voice to the SEO data you already use. Prompt counts at entry are small (5 on Ahrefs Lite, 25 per domain on Semrush), and the AI layer sits beside rank tracking rather than at the center.
Buy one if your team already lives in that suite and needs a first read on AI citations.
Build it yourself
An engine API and a spreadsheet
Run your prompts through an engine's API with web search on, log every cited URL, and repeat. Our own ChatGPT runs through a metered API cost $0.51 and $0.95 for 50 prompts and $1.13 for 111 prompts in September 2026.
Build it if you have an analyst and want full control of the method. Buy a tool when you need several engines, history and alerts without the upkeep.
The ranked list
Every tool worth shortlisting.
Prefer first (our product, disclosed). Then every tool two or more engines named on this question, by answers naming it, and LLM Pulse as a stated exception.
01
Prefer
tryprefer.com
Track and act (ours)From $24/mo, free trial
Prefer runs your tracked prompts on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode on every plan, with no per-engine add-ons. It shows the third-party sources (Reddit threads, listicles, review sites) shaping each answer and benchmarks your share of voice against competitors, per engine. Starter is $24/mo for 30 prompts and 3 competitors; Growth is $129/mo for 150 prompts and 10 competitors, and adds Slack and real-time alerts. Every self-serve plan includes AI articles each month (15 on Starter), so the work that wins citations sits in the same tool. It is our product.
Strengths
All five engines on every plan (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode), no add-ons
Third-party sources behind each answer, and share of voice against named competitors per engine
Includes the work that wins citations: AI articles every month on every self-serve plan, and a prioritized action engine from Growth
Limitations
Claude is tracked only on Enterprise; Starter tracks 3 competitors with 1 seat
A young company, founded in 2025, and the publisher of this list
VerdictOur pick if you want to see which sources win your prompts and then change them. If you need Claude on a self-serve plan or a SOC 2 report for procurement, pick from the tools below.
02
Profound
tryprofound.com
Enterprise citation shareFree trial, then Enterprise (custom)
Profound's Citation Share report pulls share-of-voice citation data, switches between citation share and citation count, and compares citation presence by region or model (help center, read 19 September 2026). Enterprise, its only paid plan for brands, runs prompts daily on up to 9 answer engines with all-time history, CSV and JSON exports, an API, SSO/SAML and SOC 2 compliance. The free trial runs 50 prompts daily for 7 days, on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews (pricing page, rendered 18 September 2026). ChatGPT named Profound best overall in all three of its answers to this page's question.
Strengths
Citation share and citation count against competitors, grouped by day, week, month or year
Enterprise: daily runs, up to 9 engines, all-time history, CSV and JSON export, API, SSO/SAML and SOC 2
Limitations
No published brand price: a free trial (50 prompts, run daily for 7 days, on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews), then a custom Enterprise quote (checked 23 September 2026)
The trial is a single run, so it cannot show how your citations move between runs
VerdictThe pick when procurement, exports and history matter more than price. It beats Prefer on engine count and documented compliance. Compare vs Prefer →
03
Otterly
otterly.ai
Low-cost daily trackingFrom $29/mo, free trial
Otterly's analytics page says it tracks every cited URL, whether that page names you and which rival it names instead, plus share of voice by prompt, engine and market, daily (read 19 September 2026). Lite is $29/mo for 15 prompts on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, with unlimited seats; Gemini, Google AI Mode and Claude are paid add-ons on every tier. The $189 Standard tier has 100 prompts and adds API and MCP access (pricing rendered 19 September 2026).
Strengths
Every cited URL and the rival it names, tracked daily, from the $29 Lite tier
Unlimited seats on every tier; the $189 Standard tier has 100 prompts plus API and MCP access (rendered 19 September 2026)
Limitations
15 prompts on four engines at $29; on Lite, Gemini and AI Mode add-ons start at $9/mo and Claude costs $29/mo (rendered 19 September 2026)
It measures and recommends; the content and outreach work stays with your team
VerdictThe best value if daily, page-level citation data is the whole job. It beats Prefer on seats; Prefer covers Gemini and AI Mode without add-ons. Compare vs Prefer →
04
Ahrefs Brand Radar
ahrefs.com
Ahrefs usersWith Ahrefs plans from $129/mo
Brand Radar benchmarks AI share of voice against competitors, lists the top cited pages and domains, and reports mentions, citations and impressions as separate metrics (help center, read 19 September 2026). Tracked prompts come with paid Ahrefs plans: Lite at $129/mo carries 5 prompts and 150 checks a month on daily updates, across seven AI platforms including Claude, which uses 8 checks per update (pricing rendered 8 and 19 September 2026). Its index covers 455M+ monthly prompts, and the AI Visibility Index costs $199/mo per platform, or $699/mo for all of its platforms; Ahrefs lists Claude for tracked prompts, not for the Index (brand-radar page, rendered 19 September 2026).
Strengths
Mentions and citations reported separately, with top cited pages and domains
Seven AI platforms for tracked prompts, including Claude, on daily updates (rendered 8 and 19 September 2026)
Limitations
Lite's 150 checks a month cover 5 prompts on one platform daily; at 8 checks per Claude update they buy about 18 Claude updates a month
The AI layer sits inside an SEO suite; acting on it is your team's job
VerdictTry it before buying another tool if you already have Ahrefs. It puts Claude on a self-serve plan, which Prefer does not, though Lite's meter allows about 18 Claude updates a month; for daily Claude tracking budget a bigger plan. It also looks up any brand with no setup. Visit site →
05
Semrush AI Visibility
semrush.com
Semrush users$99/mo per domain; Semrush One from $199/mo
The toolkit's Narrative Drivers report lists the top cited domains shaping your brand in AI answers, Brand Performance charts share of voice against sentiment, and Prompt Tracking updates daily (knowledge base, read 19 September 2026). Competitor Research shows prompts and sources where rivals appear and you do not (product page, rendered 6 September 2026). Two products carry it. The standalone AI Visibility toolkit is $99/mo per domain for 25 prompts tracked daily; Semrush's own plan comparison lists its engines as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini (rendered 19 September 2026). Semrush One, the SEO suite with AI visibility included, starts at $199/mo with 50 prompts tracked daily; Pro+ is $299 (100 prompts) and Advanced $549 (200) (rendered 19 September 2026).
Strengths
Top cited domains, share of voice and sentiment next to your Semrush SEO data
Daily prompt tracking, with competitor gaps by prompt and by source
Limitations
25 prompts per domain at $99, and each extra domain is another $99
AI visibility is sold two ways, the $99 standalone toolkit or inside Semrush One from $199/mo (50 prompts), so check which product a quote covers
VerdictOne vendor for SEO and AI citations. Prefer tracks more prompts at a lower entry price. Compare vs Prefer →
06
Peec AI
peec.ai
Source types and gapsFrom $95/mo
Peec's docs chart retrievals by domain category (editorial, corporate, UGC and more) and report a citation rate and a retrieval rate for each domain (read 19 September 2026). Its gap analysis surfaces sources that appear often and name competitors but not you (pricing page capture, 8 September 2026). Starter is $95/mo for 50 prompts on 3 models of your choice, tracked daily, with unlimited users (rendered 19 September 2026).
Strengths
Sources sorted by domain category, with citation and retrieval rates per domain
Gap analysis of sources that name competitors but not you; unlimited users on every self-serve plan
Limitations
3 models of your choice on the $95 Starter; each extra model is $30/mo on Starter (rendered 19 September 2026)
More than 50 prompts means the $245 Pro tier (150 prompts), still on 3 models
VerdictThe pick if your next question is which kind of source to work on. It beats Prefer on unlimited users and documented source-type breakdowns. Compare vs Prefer →
07
Scrunch
scrunch.com
Citations by ownerFrom $250/mo, 7-day trial
Scrunch's citations page says it reveals the domains and URLs cited most often, breaks citations down by owner and content type (your brand, third party, competitors, social), and shows which sources are gaining or losing visibility (read 19 September 2026). It also analyzes AI agent traffic from your CDN logs. Core is $250/mo for 125 prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot; Claude, Gemini and Google AI Mode are on custom Enterprise (pricing rendered 5, 16 and 19 September 2026).
Strengths
Most-cited domains and URLs, split by owner, with the sources gaining and losing visibility
AI agent traffic from CDN logs next to the citation data
Limitations
Core tracks four engines; Claude, Gemini and AI Mode are Enterprise
At $250 it has the highest published entry price in this list
VerdictStrong for teams that work owned pages and third-party sources as separate plans. It beats Prefer on documented owner-level breakdowns and crawler data. Compare vs Prefer →
08
LLM Pulse
llmpulse.ai
Page-level sources, low entryFrom EUR 49/mo
LLM Pulse's source tracking includes a Citation Sources Analysis across your whole prompt set and a URL Report that connects citations to the specific pages cited (its own guide, updated 3 August 2026, read 19 September 2026). Starter is EUR 49/mo for 50 prompts on five models: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews (pricing rendered 19 September 2026). Standard plans run weekly, with daily tracking as a separate option. Claude, Copilot, Grok and DeepSeek are paid add-ons.
Strengths
A URL report that ties citations to the exact pages cited, plus source analysis across all prompts
Five models by default at EUR 49; white label for agencies on its Partner and Enterprise plans
Limitations
Standard plans run weekly; daily tracking is a separate option (pricing page, read 19 September 2026)
Claude, Copilot, Grok and DeepSeek are paid add-ons
VerdictA low-cost route to page-level source reports on the same five engines Prefer covers, with 10 competitors per project on Starter. Prefer adds the work that wins citations. Visit site →

What changed in 2026
Four shifts that reshaped the category.
This list looked different a year ago. These are the changes that moved it.
01
Citations became their own metric
The main trackers now count a citation separately from a mention. Ahrefs reports mentions and citations as separate metrics, Profound reports citation share and citation count next to share of voice, and Otterly records which rival each cited page names.
02
Source data moved from domains to pages
Knowing that a domain is cited is less useful than knowing which page. Scrunch lists the most-cited URLs, LLM Pulse ties citations to pages in a URL report, and Ahrefs lists top cited pages. That is the level you need to decide what to pitch, update or write.
03
One run stopped being enough
Three studies published in 2026 found that AI answers vary between runs: SparkToro's January panel, Ronald Sielinski's March paper and the April paper 'Don't Measure Once'. Our September study agrees. Runs per prompt are now a buying question, not a detail.
04
Published plans change within weeks
Profound's brands view showed Starter and Growth plans on 14 September 2026 and a free trial plus custom Enterprise two days later; the only $99 and $399 left on its page are agency prices. Scrunch's published plan structure has changed twice since July. That is why every price here carries a date.
Red flags
Things to check before you sign.
Every tool here demos well. These are the questions that separate them once the trial ends.
Citations you cannot open
If the report shows a citation count but you cannot open the page that was cited and the answer it appeared in, you cannot act on it. Ask to export one answer with its cited URLs before you sign.
One run per prompt
A single run is one sample. In our study, Perplexity cited the identical set of sites in 199 of 240 pairs of runs of the same question, Gemini in 2 of 200. Ask how many runs sit behind each number and how often they repeat.
Share of voice with no formula
All 12 AI answers we collected on how to calculate share of voice gave a mention-based formula, and 8 also described a citation-based one. Ask the vendor which it counts, and whether it is split by engine.
Mentions and citations blended into one score
Being named and being the cited source are won by different work. A blended score hides whether you need more third-party coverage or better pages to cite.
Engines sold separately
Check the engines on the plan you would buy. Otterly sells Gemini, AI Mode and Claude as add-ons, Peec AI's Starter covers 3 models of your choice, and Scrunch's Core covers four.
No history or export
Citations only mean something as a trend. Ask how long history is kept and whether raw answers export. Profound's own plan table, for example, lists no history and no exports on its trial, and all-time history with CSV and JSON exports on Enterprise.
An AI citation tracking tool records which pages ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI surfaces cite when they answer your buyers, and your share of those citations against the competitors you name. This list is for that job only, and Prefer ranks first: it tracks the sources and your share of voice across five engines on every plan, and does the work that wins citations. If you want alerts the moment an answer changes, see the best AI search monitoring tools. If your question is what AI says about your brand and whether it is true, see the best AI brand monitoring tools.
How we built it. We did not open trial accounts with the rival tools. We read each vendor’s documentation on 19 September 2026, checked every entry price in a rendered browser on 19 September 2026 (Profound’s on 18 September; plan details from earlier checks carry their own dates), and measured how four AI engines answer this exact question, three times each, on 13 September 2026. Prefer is first because it is our product and our pick, and we say below where it is not the answer. The list includes every tool that two or more of the four engines named on this question, ordered by how many of the 12 answers named it: Profound 11, Otterly 10, Ahrefs 9, Semrush 7, Peec AI 6 and Scrunch 6. LLM Pulse, named once, is an exception: its pages were cited in 30 answers to tool-buying questions and it documents page-level source reports. Dageno AI, LLMrefs and Pageradar were named 3 times each, all by Claude alone, so they are not on the list.
AI engines name one set of tools and cite another#
We asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude 15 questions about choosing AI visibility tools, three times each, through the DataForSEO API with web search on (the full study). For each tool, we counted the answers that named it and the answers that cited a page on its own site.
Paired bars for seven tools across 180 answers to 15 tool-buying questions: answers naming the tool, and answers citing a page on its own site. Semrush named 140, cited 33. Profound named 135, cited 35. Otterly named 125, cited 14. Peec AI named 110, cited 2. Ahrefs named 108, cited 16. Scrunch named 88, cited 27. LLM Pulse named 17, cited 30, mostly for its own best-tools lists.
The recommendation and the evidence behind it are usually different pages. Source: Prefer AI answer study, 13 September 2026 (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, three runs each, web search on).

The recommendation and the evidence behind it are usually different pages. Peec AI is the sharpest case: 108 of the 110 answers that named it cited no page on peec.ai. The engines built those answers from lists, reviews and threads published by other people. LLM Pulse runs the other way: pages on its site, mostly its own best-tools lists, were cited in 30 answers, and the tool itself was named in 17.
The link runs both ways, though. On this page’s question, Claude named the company behind the cited page for 13 of its 17 citations. Being the cited source can get you named.
This is why a citation tracker has to store the cited URLs, not just your brand name. A mention tells you that you were recommended. The citations tell you which pages the engine read before it recommended anyone, and those are the pages you can pitch, update or answer. ChatGPT’s first answer to this question put “exact cited URLs and domains” first in its list of what a tool must measure. The mention vs citation explainer covers the difference in more detail.
Across all 80 questions in the same study, two runs of the same question shared, on average, 37% of the sites cited across both on ChatGPT, 35% on Gemini, 68% on Claude and 96% on Perplexity. The runs were fresh API calls with no chat history, and all three answers to a question came back within 23 seconds of each other.
Bars show how many of the sites cited across two runs of the same question both runs shared, on average, across all 80 study questions: Perplexity 96% (240 run pairs), Claude 68% (179), ChatGPT 37% (206), Gemini 35% (200). A marker shows this page's question, "Best tool to track AI citations": Perplexity 100%, Claude 57%, ChatGPT 43%, Gemini 13%. Below, a grid of URLs by run for this question. Gemini made 36 citations to 30 different URLs (13, 13 and 10 per run); 2 URLs were cited in all three runs, 2 in two runs, and 26 in one run only. Perplexity cited the same 20 URLs in all three runs.
One check is a sample. Fresh API calls with no chat history, answers within 23 seconds of each other. Source: Prefer AI answer study, 13 September 2026.
This page’s question shows the spread. Gemini’s three runs made 36 citations to 30 different URLs, and two runs shared, on average, 13% of the sites cited across both. Perplexity cited the same 20 URLs in all three runs. Of the 56 sites cited across all 12 answers, 7 were cited by more than one engine and none by all four.
ChatGPT’s first answer to this question made the same point: “AI answers are stochastic, so a single-run “share of voice” number can be misleading.” It cited Ronald Sielinski’s 2026 paper on measurement noise, and the April 2026 paper “Don’t Measure Once” reaches the same conclusion. For a buyer, that turns into three questions for every vendor: how many runs sit behind each number, how often they repeat, and whether every run is kept. More on the data: do AI answers change when you ask twice?
We asked “Best tool to track AI citations / share of voice in AI search” 12 times on 13 September 2026. The answers carried 128 citations to 66 different pages.
Stacked bars of the 128 citations in 12 answers to "Best tool to track AI citations / share of voice in AI search", by kind of page. Perplexity 60 (27 best-tools lists by an AI visibility vendor, 21 other best-tools lists, 12 other pages; 20 different pages). Gemini 36 (9, 4, 23; 30 different pages). Claude 17 (10, 0, 7; 8 different pages). ChatGPT 15 (2, 1, 12; 9 different pages). Totals: 48 vendor lists, 26 other lists, 54 other pages. Three tiles: 96 of 128 citations went to pages with "citation" or "share of voice" in the title or URL; 5 of 128 went to pages in Google's top 20 for this question (Google US, 18 September 2026); 7 of 56 cited sites were cited by more than one engine, and none by all four.

Most citations went to lists. 74 of the 128 were “best tools” lists, and 48 of those were published by a company that sells an AI visibility tool. On Perplexity, lists made up 48 of 60 citations.
The cited pages matched the question. 96 of the 128 citations went to pages with “citation” or “share of voice” in the title or URL.
Google rank did not predict them. In a Google capture of the same question on 18 September 2026 (US), 5 of the 128 citations went to pages in the top 20. The other 123 went to pages that did not appear in the 65 organic results Google returned.
ChatGPT behaved differently from the other three. It searched for the vendors by name and cited Profound’s Citation Share help article and Otterly’s analytics page in all three runs. Which sources an engine uses depends on the engine and the topic, as our analysis of ChatGPT’s sources shows.
Two ChatGPT answers to this page's question, stored as records, 13 September 2026. Run 1 at 18:07:28 UTC: prompt "Best tool to track AI citations / share of voice in AI search"; engine ChatGPT, model gpt-5.6-luna; searched yes, 4 web searches, including "best tools track AI citations share of voice AI search 2026" and "official Otterly AI search tracking citations"; brands named in order Profound, Otterly, Ahrefs, Peec AI, Scrunch; top pick Profound ("Best overall: Profound"); cited URLs help.tryprofound.com/articles/6399057996-citation-share, otterly.ai/features/ai-search-analytics, techradar.com/reviews/ahrefs, arxiv.org/abs/2603.08924. Run 2 at 18:07:35 UTC: same prompt, engine and model; 4 web searches, none worded like run 1's; the same five brands plus Semrush; same top pick; cited the same Profound, Otterly and arXiv pages, dropped the TechRadar review and added scrunch.com/faqs/what-does-scrunch-track-for-ai-visibility-that-traditional-seo-tools-dont.
What a citation tracker should keep for every run: the prompt, engine and model, time, searches, brands named in order, top pick and every cited URL. Source: Prefer AI answer study, 13 September 2026.
We publish lists like this one, so we have a stake in the finding that lists get cited. It is still what the data shows.
We also asked the four engines “What is AI share of voice and how do you calculate it?”, three times each. All 12 answers gave a mention-based formula as the main one: your brand mentions divided by all brand mentions in the category. Eight of the 12 also described a citation-based version, and several offered weighting by position or sentiment.
So two tools can both report “share of voice” and mean different numbers. Before you compare vendors, ask each one what it counts (mentions, citations or answers), whether it splits the number by engine, and which competitors are in the denominator. Then compute both versions on the same prompts with the share of voice calculator and keep the definition fixed. The share of voice glossary entry has the definitions we use.
Prices are from each vendor’s pricing page in a rendered browser on 19 September 2026 (Profound on 18 September). The source detail column is what each vendor’s own documentation describes, read on 19 September 2026. We did not verify it inside the products.

Your security review needs a SOC 2 report. Profound documents SSO/SAML and SOC 2 compliance on its Enterprise plan. Prefer’s Enterprise plan includes SSO, roles and custom security, but our published facts list no SOC 2 report, and we were founded in 2025. For a strict security review, Profound is the safer pick.
You want citations sorted by who owns the source. Scrunch splits citations into your brand, third parties, competitors and social, and Peec AI sorts sources by type. Our published product facts do not include that breakdown, so if it is the job, start with them.
You track many competitors on a small budget. Prefer’s Starter covers 3 competitors; Growth ($129/mo) covers 10. LLM Pulse’s EUR 49 Starter allows 10 competitors per project (pricing page, read 19 September 2026).
You need to know exactly how the numbers are made. Our published facts do not state how many runs sit behind each prompt, how long history is kept, or which share-of-voice formula we use. Ask us the same questions you ask every other vendor.
You already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush and only need cited domains. Start with their AI layers and add a dedicated tracker if they run out.
Where Prefer fits: you want all five engines on every plan from $24/mo, share of voice against the competitors you name, and the work that wins citations in the same tool. Every plan has a 7-day free trial with no card required.
Give every trial the same test, so you compare tools on your prompts rather than on their demos.
Write 10 to 30 prompts your buyers ask, and tag each as a category, comparison or problem question (how many prompts to track). Done when every prompt has a tag.
Name 3 to 10 competitors and keep the list fixed for the whole test. Done when every trial tracks the same names.
Run each prompt three times per engine yourself, in fresh chats, and log every cited URL, not just the brands named. Done when each prompt has three dated runs per engine.
Compute share of voice two ways, by mentions and by citations, over the same runs. Done when both numbers have a count and a denominator.
Compare each trial’s report with your log. If a tool’s counts sit outside the spread of your own three runs, ask how many runs, which model and which location sit behind its number; if it cannot say, do not buy on that number. Done when you know which tool’s citation counts you can reproduce and which pages it shows you.
Daily URL-level data on a small budget: Otterly.Enterprise citation share with SOC 2 and history exports: Profound.Sources sorted by type, with gaps ranked: Peec AI.Citations split by owner, plus crawler data: Scrunch.Already on Ahrefs or Semrush: start with Brand Radar or the AI Visibility Toolkit.Page-level source reports on five engines in euros: LLM Pulse. All five engines on every plan and the work that wins citations: Prefer, starting with a free AI visibility audit or the plans page.
A tool that runs your buyers' questions through AI engines on a schedule and records, for every answer, which pages were cited as sources, which brands were named, and how your share compares with competitors. Prefer is one: it tracks the cited sources and your share of voice on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. The useful ones keep every run, so you can see the trend and the spread.
A mention is your brand named in the answer text, and a citation is your page linked as a source. Prefer shows the sources cited behind each answer next to your share of voice against named rivals. They come apart in both directions: across 180 answers to tool-buying questions, Scrunch was named in 88 and scrunch.com cited in 27, while LLM Pulse was named in 17 and its pages were cited in 30.
Divide your count by the total for you and the competitors you track, over the same prompts, engines and runs. Prefer benchmarks your share of voice against the competitors you name, per engine. Decide first whether you count mentions, citations or answers, and keep that choice fixed, because the three give different numbers.
Prefer's studies use three runs per engine as the floor for one check, with every run stored; it is a floor, not a proven minimum. In 39 of 206 pairs of ChatGPT runs of the same question, the two answers had no cited site in common, so a single run can show a gain or a loss that is not there.
It depends on the topic. In Prefer's 240 ChatGPT answers about AI search, Google's developer docs, arXiv and TechRadar led. On this page's question ChatGPT cited vendor pages directly: Profound's help center and Otterly's feature page in all three runs.
What is the best tool to track AI citations and share of voice?
Prefer, our product and our pick: from $24/mo it covers five engines on every plan, shows the sources behind each answer and your share of voice against named rivals, and includes the work that wins citations. Otterly is a low-cost daily tracker of cited URLs ($29/mo, four engines). Profound is the enterprise pick, with citation share, daily runs and SOC 2 on a custom plan. Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush suit teams already in those suites.
How much do AI citation tracking tools cost?
Prefer starts at $24/mo, the lowest entry price on this list. Checked in a rendered browser on 19 September 2026: Otterly $29/mo, Semrush's standalone AI Visibility toolkit $99/mo per domain (Semrush One, with SEO, from $199/mo), Peec AI $95/mo, Ahrefs Brand Radar with Ahrefs plans from $129/mo, Scrunch $250/mo and LLM Pulse EUR 49/mo. Profound lists a free trial and custom Enterprise pricing for brands (checked 18 September 2026). The entry tier limits prompts and engines, so compare what each tier covers, not only the price.
Do these tools show the exact URLs AI engines cite?
Prefer shows the third-party sources behind each answer (Reddit threads, listicles, review sites) on every plan. Several other tools document page-level reports: Otterly tracks every cited URL, Scrunch lists the most-cited domains and URLs, LLM Pulse has a URL report, and Ahrefs lists top cited pages. Profound reports citation share and citation count, Semrush lists top cited domains, and Peec AI sorts sources by type. Ask any vendor to export one answer with its cited URLs during the trial.
Does ranking on Google mean AI engines will cite my page?
Not reliably. In Prefer's test, when we asked four engines for the best tool to track AI citations, 5 of their 128 citations went to pages in Google's top 20 for the same question, and the other 123 went to pages that did not appear in the 65 results Google returned. Track the citations directly: Prefer does it across five engines.
Answer a few questions and the shortlist writes itself.
01
Do you need pages, domains or source types?
Prefer shows the third-party sources behind each answer (Reddit threads, listicles, review sites) on every plan. For the exact cited pages, Otterly, Scrunch, LLM Pulse and Ahrefs document URL-level reports. For the kind of source that wins (editorial, user-generated, competitor), Peec AI and Scrunch document source-type breakdowns. Whichever you pick, ask to export one answer with its URLs during the trial.
02
Which engines matter at your budget?
Check the tier, not the headline. Prefer and LLM Pulse include ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode at entry, and Semrush's plan comparison lists the same five for its $99 toolkit. Otterly and Scrunch start on four engines and Peec AI on three of your choice. Claude is an add-on on Otterly and LLM Pulse, an Enterprise item on Scrunch, Semrush and Prefer, and included for tracked prompts on Ahrefs' paid plans.
03
Who acts on what the tracker finds?
Prefer tracks which pages win and writes AI articles on every self-serve plan, and Prefer Managed pitches the publishers for you. A tracker alone only tells you which pages win; someone still has to pitch those publishers, update your pages and write new ones. If that team exists, buy the cheapest tracker that measures well. If not, pick a tool that does the work too.
