When you hit a Prefer plan limit, the action is blocked and you see an upgrade prompt. Prefer has no overage billing and no surprise charges, so you cannot spend more than your plan by accident. To go past a limit you move up a tier (Starter, Growth, Scale) or talk to Prefer about Enterprise. Last updated 3 October 2026

Blocked, not billed

Some software lets you keep going past a limit and bills you later. Prefer does the opposite. When you reach a Prefer plan limit, the action is blocked and you get an upgrade prompt, and there is no overage billing at all. Your invoice is the plan price and nothing else. These are the metered limits on each self-serve plan: Enterprise has custom limits, with unlimited prompts and projects.

The prompt limit is the one most teams reach first

A tracked prompt is one question tracked in one country, with all engines sharing that slot. Countries multiply: the same question tracked in 3 countries uses 3 slots. So a team on Growth tracking 50 questions across 3 markets has used all 150 of its slots, even though it only wrote 50 questions. When you get the prompt limit warning, work through it in this order:
  1. Review which prompts carry buying intent. Questions nobody asks before buying can go.
  2. Disable or remove low-value prompts in the Prompts console to free slots.
  3. Check your country spread. Tracking every prompt in every market is the fastest way to fill the allowance.
  4. Upgrade when the prompts you still want exceed the tier. An upgrade applies immediately.
Because Prefer blocks instead of bills, reaching a limit is a planning decision, never a billing surprise.

What does not count against a limit

Some things never use up an allowance, which is worth knowing before you plan an upgrade:
  • Engines. Each tracked prompt runs on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode inside one slot. You never pay per engine on a self-serve plan.
  • Countries as a setting. Every plan can select any country with no geography fee. The cost of a country is only the extra prompt slots it uses.
  • Integrations. Google Search Console and GA4 connections are listed on every self-serve plan and are not metered.
The article allowance is monthly, so a team that drafts its full allowance in the first 10 days of a month waits for the next month or upgrades. The other limits are standing caps, not monthly counters.

What you cannot do at a limit

You cannot buy a top-up. Extra prompts, extra engines and extra articles are not for sale as add-ons on brand plans today, so more capacity always means the next tier or an Enterprise conversation. Agencies are the exception in one sense: they add capacity by adding active clients, each with its own Growth-level workspace. See the full matrix on Prefer pricing. If you are not sure your current prompts are the right ones, a fresh free audit suggests the buyer questions AI engines answer in your category.

Frequently asked questions

Prefer’s documented behavior is that the action that would exceed the limit is blocked. Adding a new prompt, project or competitor past the cap is what gets stopped; the pricing and docs do not describe existing tracking being switched off because you reached a cap.
Prefer meters tracked prompts, AI articles per month, tracked competitors and projects. Team members and engines are not metered: every self-serve plan includes the same 5, and countries are unlimited, though each country a prompt runs in uses its own prompt slot.
Yes, for prompts. Prefer lets you enable or disable individual prompts and swap prompts in and out from the Prompts console, so retiring low-value questions makes room for new ones without changing plan.
