When your Prefer trial ends without an upgrade, tracking pauses and nothing is deleted. Prefer does not charge you automatically, because the trial needs no card. Your prompts, competitors and results stay in the workspace, and everything resumes when you upgrade to a paid plan from $24/mo. Last updated 3 October 2026

The short version: a pause, not a deletion

A Prefer trial lasts 7 days. When a Prefer trial ends without an upgrade, tracking pauses and nothing is deleted, so you can come back later and pick up where you left off. That is the documented behavior on the Prefer pricing page. Three things follow from it:
  • No surprise charge. The trial starts without a card, so the end of the trial cannot trigger a payment.
  • No lost setup. The topics, prompts and competitors you configured during onboarding stay in the workspace.
  • No new runs. While paused, Prefer stops sending your prompts to the engines, so you collect no fresh answers until you upgrade.
The Prefer docs add one detail worth knowing: every new workspace starts on the Starter plan with a 7-day trial. So the workspace you return to after a pause is the same one you set up on day one, with the same project, the same topics and the same competitor list. You do not rebuild anything, and you do not need a new account.

How to upgrade before or after the trial ends

Upgrading is a checkout, then a plan. Payments run through Dodo Payments as merchant of record, prices are listed in US dollars, and checkout shows your local currency and any tax. Paid plans are billed in advance, monthly or annually. A practical sequence:
  1. Compare your trial usage with the plan limits. The trial capped you at 30 prompts. Starter includes 30, Growth 150 and Scale 500, so size the plan to the prompt set you actually want.
  2. Choose monthly or annual. Annual is one invoice for 12 months and saves at most 20% over monthly.
  3. Pay at checkout. Once a card is on file, the billing portal handles later plan changes and cancellation.
  4. Run tracking again. With a paid plan active, Prefer resumes tracking your prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode.

What you keep and what you lose

The one thing a paused workspace cannot give you is the answers it never collected. History in Prefer is built run by run, so a gap of a few weeks between the trial and the upgrade shows up as a gap in your trend lines. If AI visibility is a priority, upgrading inside the trial window keeps the series unbroken. On the paid plans, history depth depends on the tier: Starter keeps 6 months of historical data, Growth keeps 24 months and Scale keeps 36 months, as listed on Prefer pricing. Once you are tracking, the Action Center turns each run into ranked work. Not ready to pay? Run the free audit for a fresh snapshot any time.

Frequently asked questions

No. Prefer starts the trial without a card, so there is nothing to charge when it ends. You only pay once you choose a plan and add payment details at checkout.
Prefer’s documentation says tracking pauses and nothing is deleted when a trial lapses. It does not spell out exactly which screens stay readable in a paused workspace, so if you need to pull something out before deciding, ask the Prefer team at support@tryprefer.com.
Prefer’s pricing page and docs describe a 7-day trial and say nothing about extensions. If you need more time to evaluate, ask the Prefer team directly; the free audit also stays available any time with no account.
