The short answer

What does AIO mean in SEO?

SEO wins a ranking, AEO the direct answer, and GEO a mention or citation in AI-written answers. In Prefer's September 2026 test, all 24 AI answers said AIO means AI optimization and 20 also said Google AI Overviews. Google calls optimizing for its AI search still SEO; Prefer tracks the AI side across five engines.

Key takeaways

  • We asked 'SEO vs AEO vs GEO vs AIO: what's the difference?' and 'What does AIO mean in SEO?' three times each on 13 September 2026, via API with web search requested (ChatGPT gpt-5.6-luna, Claude claude-sonnet-5, Gemini gemini-3.8-flash, Perplexity sonar-pro). All 24 answers gave AI optimization as a meaning of AIO, and 20 also used it for Google AI Overviews. Nineteen named AI optimization first; five led with AI Overviews (two Perplexity answers to the four-way question, two Claude answers and one Gemini answer to the AIO question). Nineteen of the 24 answers used web search; the five that did not were ChatGPT's three and two of Claude's three answers to the AIO question. (Prefer research note: SEO vs AEO vs GEO vs AIO (2026-09-19))
  • On 13 September 2026 (US, English, desktop), all three of Google's AI answers gave AI optimization as a meaning of AIO and differed on the second meaning. The AI Overview for the four-way question labelled AIO 'Artificial Intelligence Optimization / AI Overviews' and described it as optimizing to win spots in Google's AI Overviews 'or using AI software to speed up your content creation process', citing launchcodex.com and a June 2025 LinkedIn article that defines AIO as using AI tools to create and improve content. The AI Overview for 'What does AIO mean in SEO?' said AIO 'stands for Artificial Intelligence Optimization' and gave only that meaning. AI Mode, asked the same question, gave 'AI Optimization (or AI Overviews Optimization)' and the All in One SEO WordPress plugin. (Prefer research note: SEO vs AEO vs GEO vs AIO (2026-09-19))
  • Google's guide to its generative AI features (last updated 10 July 2026) says 'AEO' and 'GEO' 'are both terms you may see used to describe work specifically focused on improving visibility in AI search experiences', and that 'optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.' (Google Search Central, Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search)
  • Checked in a rendered browser on 19 September 2026, three Google Search Central pages (the generative AI features guide, 'AI features and your website' and the guide to third-party SEO advice, last updated 10 July 2026, 10 December 2025 and 5 June 2026) never use the acronym AIO. The two that name the feature write AI Overviews in full. The generative AI guide's address ends in ai-optimization-guide, but the page never uses the phrase 'AI optimization'. (Prefer research note: SEO vs AEO vs GEO vs AIO (2026-09-19))
  • All 12 answers to the four-way question defined SEO by rankings in search results, AEO by being the direct answer, and GEO by being cited or mentioned in AI-generated answers. All 12 tied AEO to snippets and voice assistants. (Prefer research note: SEO vs AEO vs GEO vs AIO (2026-09-19))
  • Gemini's three answers to the four-way question never used AIO for Google AI Overviews. Its three answers to 'What does AIO mean in SEO?' all did, and all three named the All in One SEO WordPress plugin. Five of the 24 answers (three Gemini, two Perplexity) also described AIO as using AI tools inside content or SEO work. (Prefer research note: SEO vs AEO vs GEO vs AIO (2026-09-19))

The engines agree on what SEO, AEO and GEO mean#

We asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity this question and “What does AIO mean in SEO?” three times each on 13 September 2026, via API, not the consumer apps. In Prefer’s test, all 12 answers to the four-way question defined SEO by rankings, AEO by the direct answer and GEO by citations in AI-written answers. Their definitions diverged on AIO.

AEOAnswer engine optimizationYour text used as the direct answerSnippets, voice answers, AI answers
GEOGenerative engine optimizationA mention or citation in an AI-written answerAI assistants and AI search summaries

The engines still tie AEO to snippets and voice assistants: all 12 named both. Google’s documentation, like our AEO definition, applies AEO and GEO to AI search. Each pair in depth: GEO vs SEO, AEO vs SEO, AEO vs GEO.

AIO has two main meanings, and Google’s own answers disagree#

All 24 answers said AIO means AI optimization, and 20 also said it is short for Google AI Overviews. Nineteen named AI optimization first; five led with AI Overviews. Five (three Gemini, two Perplexity) also mentioned using AI tools inside content or SEO work.

How you ask changes what you hear: Gemini’s three four-way answers never used AIO for AI Overviews; its three AIO answers all did.

Google’s own AI answers all gave AI optimization that day, and split on the second meaning. For the four-way question, its AI Overview labelled AIO “Artificial Intelligence Optimization / AI Overviews” and described it as optimizing for AI Overviews “or using AI software to speed up your content creation process”. For the AIO question, its AI Overview gave only Artificial Intelligence Optimization, while AI Mode added AI Overviews optimization and the All in One SEO plugin.

All three ChatGPT four-way answers said to get AIO defined first. All three Claude answers relayed a rule from launchcodex.com: treat AIO “as Google AI Overviews unless your team defines it differently in writing.” Until a written definition arrives, read AIO as AI Overviews: the narrowest meaning, and one you can measure (step 3).

Google’s documentation files AEO and GEO under SEO#

Google’s generative AI guide groups AEO and GEO together and says: “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” Three Google Search Central pages we checked never use the acronym AIO. The two that name the feature write AI Overviews in full.

What to do when a proposal says AIO#

  1. Get the meaning in writing. Ask: AI answers in general, AI Overviews in Google Search, or AI-written content? Done when the proposal names one meaning and one metric.
  2. For AI Overviews, check each task against Google’s generative AI guide. Pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and for Google Search you “can ignore tactics like ‘chunking’ content, creating unnecessary AI text files (like llms.txt), or pursuing inauthentic mentions.” Done when every paid task is in the guide or comes with evidence.
  3. Measure AI Overviews in Google Search Console. Its Generative AI performance report counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Done when the months before work starts are saved. Google says it reached all websites on 31 August 2026; if yours is missing, check for too few impressions or an exclusion from generative AI features.
  4. For AI answers in general, ask for the prompt set. Start with 10 to 50 buyer questions (how many to track), run them every week and report per engine (how often to check). No published benchmark says what citation rate is good, so judge it against your own baseline and named competitors (why). Done when the proposal lists the prompts, the engines and the schedule.
